trailer idea.

Right on.....

Those boxes are $$$$......by the time you buy a few of those plus shipping you could already have a military trailer if that is what you are looking for.

Just my 2 cents

I went down this route too, but they weigh alot.

I then looked at aluminum tool box's, and found the only really large ones were "dock boxes", and they did'nt have suitable hinges to butt two together.

Then I progressed to "dog boxes"

My laptop got destroyed last month and lost the company links,

basicly I got a quote for a 24' high two dog box with upper hinged storage, no air vents and solid doors.... and it came to be around 800 plus shipping.

Then stumbled across some military aluminum shiping containers, that were perfect.

The military trailers are fine, as long as you can fab a lid, dust gets everywhere on a dirt track, and can make your lovely camping gear a dirty mess real quick.

you only need two hours on a gravel track plus a ten min shower to realise what muds made out of

Rubber seal if install right should solve that problem!....Also making sure your trailer is water tight with some chalk does the trick too!

I had the same thought at one point too. Those boxes are fairly easy to find on Craigslist for cheap. As far as the weight, how much does an M416 weigh?

Your better off using these. Diamond tread alluminum truck boxes. Not real expensive but real lite. About 260.00 for 57" length. They come in several sizes. The lids are offest a lil bit to clear the front bed pannels in a truck. So piggy backing them back to back will aloow them to both open at once.

They have a brite tread aluminum box for 219.00 the deminsions are 57 in L x 20 in W x 18 in H

I think you might want to look into a Bosski atv trailer the aluminum 800 4 FT. (30 cuft.) and 1600 6FT. (45cu.ft) you can mount the box on a new frame. You can see mine under Gregny's trailer build I know its for an ATV but for the money it's a awesome box and the 6FT. box only weighs around 100lbs.Let me know what you think. I'm also going to make mine interchangable with an off road chassis to pull with my truck.

I think you should go for it. The 60" boxes from southern tool look like a good size and at around 170lb each it is not that heavy for a trailer. 340 lbs total for two boxes that has lids and is lockable isn't that bad. Adding a frame, axle, and wheels won't be far off weight wise from a military trailer. The good part about building your own is that you can customize the trailer to your tow vehicle. The trailer can be the same width and have the same wheel bolt pattern. Yes, you can get a military trailer that already weighs 600 +or-, but you still need to find a way to weatherproof it, lock it, and do something with the wheel bolt pattern (if that suits your fancy.)

Price comparison? Well I guess that depends on how much you can get an M416 for. They are hard to find at a good price.

I thought about it to the point of coming up with three aluminum boxes with weather seals. They are 44 tall 34 wide 30 deep as I recall. I ended up finding a beater enclosed trailer for $200 and making a mini 1 person camper. I cut one of the three boxes in half to make side hatches out of it.

I should be working on the trailer again soon....its still rough but I use it regularly as a bike hauler.

Link in my sig.
