Trailer Storage containers

Ok, I thought it might be good to see what kind of boxes etc people are using and prefer for packing their trailers. I've seen everything from residential grade plastic storage boxes to Action packers to Military surplus ammo contailers to garbage sacks.

I'm still trying to decide what I want to use for my trailer build. I'd love to hear opinions and see some shots of the different boxes that people here are using.

I found these made by Solent Plastics in the UK. Look like a sturdy containter that stacks well. Down side is that the lid is not watertight. being watertight isn't a requirement for me but would be nice.

Let's see what else you've got.

I am currently using a similar box made by Akro-Mils. The size I prefer is model #39120 (21.5"x15"x12.5", LxWxH) I can fit 12 of these boxes into my Adventure Trailers, Chaser #15 including the Engle fridge. Great product! In 2 years of owning these boxes I have only managed to crush one lid. Also they are food grade plastic so they clean up nice. They can be purchased at several locations. I bought mine thru

Adam, I think waterproof, would be the biggest question to answer. If it is not a concern, then there are alot of choices, I have some Rubbermaid that are a thinker plastic than normal and hold up really well.

Well, seeing that my trailer isnt going to be watertight, the next best thing is to have some boxes that are. However, I don't intend on really spending that much time in the water with the trailer. So most of these boxes would probably be ok unless I get into water deep enough to submerge one of them, allowing water in throug the lid.

I'm hoping to have this thread just be another resource for others (as well as myself) to see what people are using and how they are using them. Thanks for the picture Gear! That is great. I love seeing how you've got them packed in your AT.

Any other ideas?

I'm using these.

Totally waterproof, and tough as nails, and only about 25 lbs each cause they are aluminum. Got them at an auction at Hill AFB and sold all the one's I didn't need. I'd gladly buy and sell some more if they come up again.

I have several military boxes

The medical aluminum box like fx40faxs and a larger aluminum box is what I use both in the back of the TJ and the trailer. They are bearproof and work good for non-perishable camp food.

Its pretty large but only weighs 29 lbs.

Side angle-I bought both containers from the Sportsman's Guide. Coleman's Surplus,Army Surplus Warehouse, also carries the smaller aluminum chests the last time I checked.

I have one of those. Good box for sure but they're a bit heavy and bulky. I'm ok having one or two that size, but having some smaller boxes would be a bit more convenient I think.

Here's mine.

I've been using RubberMaid Action Packers, although I'm thinking about switching over to the Akro-Mils (shown above) or similar because they have more usable space in relationship to the space they take up.

I've been using 8 gallon action packers for our AT Chaser. I really like them. They are durable, keep things dry, clean and most importantly the 8 gallon size is easy to lift in and out of the trailer. I had used some larger containers but found them too difficult to lift in and out when loaded with gear. They only cost about $15 each. I have them all labled for easy identifcation of whats inside them. I too looked at the Akro-Mils box. They definitely stack a little better but did not like the two piece hinged lid. I prefer a one piece lid like the action packer. Though not completely water proof they do a very good job at no collecting water or letting in moisture if left out over night. You may have to try a couple of things but you'll find something that works for you.

I use the same brand container (just slightly different size). I use them for everything now. They're great for storing gear in the garage too. I like the fact that the Akro-Mil containers stack. And they're cost effective. Imagine trying to buy a dozen Pelican cases of similar size. Eek.

I've since given up on the Action Packers because they do not utilize space efficiently and they do not stack well (they slide around).
