Transfer Case rebuild = Silence is golden –

After a few years I finally got the whine coming from under the cruiser fixed.

I found somebody on the ih8mud site with the exact same problem. http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/196873-fj-62-whinning.html
MUD is a great resource for land cruiser tech. I helped me diagnose my problem back when nobody but me could hear the faint whine.

When it was starting I was the only person who could hear it. To me it sounded faintly like a small two stroke bike riding next to me. I could not hear it from the passenger seat. It finally got so loud that I would have to turn the radio up to drown it out. In the end it sounded like a swarm of bees were under the car.
So more than a year later..

Here is my own Idler Shaft –

I went to Mudrak’s in Sonoma for the t-case rebuild because I know better than to do this type of work on my own.

While they were under the cruiser they took off and cleaned the transmission pan

Did a new gasket on the oil pan to hopefully fix my annoying oil leak.

Mudrak’s Rocks! Gary is super cool.

Looks great and I don't hear any whine! We switched motor oil to Redline Synthetic - also went synthetic in the transfer case and transmission. For a shake down drive we drove to Monterey and back for the weekend from SF!

The love affair with my land cruiser is back on. I think I will drive it to work today just because..

It's a good thing you did it when you first heard noise, there are two thrust bushings on that shaft aginst the case and if they spin the case is ruined.

Well actually.. I was hearing it long before I could get the mechanic to hear it and waited over a year to bring it to him again when it was loud enough that a dead person could hear it.
Time will tell how it holds up.

Gary is da Man! He helped us out on our recent Utah trip after my lower rear control arm broke. Gary, in his supreme talented blacksmith way, beat the stretched bushing end back round and then welded it. Thanks Gary...steaks are on me next time we meet!

That is some good stuff there. Have you seen the Moab video from last year?

More of Gary doing some welding in the field (in bare feet)
