Transfer Flow developing larger GASOLINE tank (factory-replacement) for RAM 2500/3500 CC Short Bed

Transfer Flow is currently in the prototype phase and has reached a key decision point.

At this stage, the tank is designed to hold 44 gallons. They had initially hoped to offer a larger capacity, but available space has limited the options. Gas systems are also more expensive than diesel systems due to their complexity, which includes specialized fuel lines, extra emissions canisters, and the need for extensive testing.

To help guide the next steps, TF asks for your input on the following:

1. The estimated retail cost of the currently designed 44-gallon tank is $2800. Would you be willing to invest this amount to increase your fuel capacity by 13 gallons?
2. We are also considering increasing the tank's height to bring the capacity to approximately 50 gallons. Adding height requires a larger sending unit and adds approximately $400 to the total cost. Would this option be of interest to you?

Slight drift (but still related to more gasoline for a Ram CCSB)
Running 40s precludes me from using the factory spare location for a tire, so I am installing a Summit SUM-255028 (replacement for a Ford tank *C3Z9002AA**) 40 gallon tank in that location (for 71 gallons total). A great fit other than I want to move the exhaust to in front of the rear axle (maybe not necessary, but safer?).

With the Rambox option, it is a great place to mount the filler (Perko 1318DPGBLK Polymer Vented Gas Fill) without 'harming' the side of the bed as a great straight shot to the filler neck of the fuel tank, and even 'locked' when the tailgate is on and locked.



No projected progress until after the Oregon rainy season, but I will post a 'how-to' when completed. (using a transfer pump to fill the factory tank, with a sender and gauge for the aux tank, and selective switching)

Today, I heard back from Transfer Flow on the tank status:


The highlights:
The tank prototyping is complete and the capacity is 46G. So basically, an additional 15G over factory tank. Durability testing has begun, and is going well so far.

Remaining hurdles:
-complete durability testing
-complete emissions testing
-obtain Executive Order (EO) from CARB.

The target launch date is roughly September, with the caveat that this could change because gasoline systems are complicated with many parts.



Some details:
As you all know, TF had been deciding between 44G and 50G tank. The feedback they received from customers didn’t show a strong preference for one size or the other. Also, going above 50G requires a larger sending unit (more $).

So, TF decided to use all possible space forward and backward of the factory tank, while avoiding going lower as best as possible. That effort yielded a 46G tank. I was told that the ground clearance on this 46G should be similar to the factory skidplate, on models that have a factory skidplate. Note that this 50G tank that was under consideration will NOT be developed.

As of late March, the tank had been installed in Transfer Flow's 2024 Ram a few months to perform durability testing, and was reportedly going smoothly.

TF was in contact with CARB regarding testing and awaiting their direction on emissions testing.

I'll check in with TF to see if there is any updated info to share.

CARB is/will be no more. It soon will be illegal for a state to regulate above federal government standards.

UPDATE:

The Ram tank is still moving forward. Transfer Flow recently received green light from CARB to proceed with emissions testing. They're working through a "few final details" and will begin testing shortly.

Assuming testing goes smoothly, they'll likely then need to wait a few months for the Executive Order from CARB that officially authorizes the tank for sale.

It appears that the Power Wagon may not be compatible with the TF tank, though it's possible that the engineering team will find a solution. No word on the specifics of the compatibility issue.

Regarding availability of the tank for purchase, Transfer Flow is stating that they're "hopeful for the end of summer."

Titan offers a 30-gal tank for the spare tire area, however they only recommend for diesel trucks.
