Transmission Breather Tube Extension & Relocation

Most trucks across the makes/models do not have adequate transmission breather tubes as they sit right on top of the case. Here's a good video showing how easy it is to extend and save from a costly rebuild.

Nice video!

I need to do this to my rig soon. I extended all the breathers on my Jeep, now I need to do my Tahoe. Especially since I'm planning a trip in April that will involve multiple water crossings!

I hear ya...I swamped my transmission and rear axle running through big mud puddles in Maine.

$300 later my transmission is saved, but I still need to tear off the rear diff cover and change up the fluids.

Me too. I've got a leaking axle seal at the drum end, so I'm going to replace both axle seals, change the fluid, and extend the rear diff breather all at the same time.

Thanks for posting that cool video Spargman. Funny how so many guys install a snorkel on their rigs but dont pay attention to the transmission. Nice job....:)

Quick question:

Does the 241 Transfer Case have an external vent? I've located and made plans for extending the vents for the front/rear diffs and tranny, but I can't seem to locate a breather on the TC.

Thanks,

Casey

Anyone know about the 241 breather? Does anyone have a parts breakdown image for the 241?

Thanks!

Casey, it's just like the one in the video...too short for real water crossings. With the age of the breather tube and if you plan on keeping the truck for awhile, replace the whole thing and add in a breather vent. You can either head to the junkyard + Home Depot or their site sells a transfer case extension kit.

Is the breather a short tube? I'm having trouble actually locating the vent....

Thanks!

The vent in the stock location can be tough to locate on our trucks for the transfer case!!! It's near the back of the engine and look for it from the passenger side...they tend to be easier to see on the passenger side vs driver.

But it's on the back of the engine a few inches down from the top.

So the transfer case vent tube runs across the top of the transmission up to the rear of the engine? Just wanting to clarify.

Thanks!!

That's the one...but the transmission also has a breather tube, it is however much shorter and does not come with the plastic vent; it's pretty close in proximity to the transfer case tube.

Here's a video on the transmission breather tube so you know which one you are working with.

Thanks! I've found the transmission vent tube, but need to dig around a bit more for the transfer case vent. I'm planning a "High Water Mark" trip with Central Overland in about two weeks, and I need to make sure all my vents are taken care of before we hit several water crossings.

Start at the transfer case (driver's side) and you will find a black hollow tube sitting on top of it. The tube routes near the top of the transmission (driver's side) and then up towards the back of the engine and terminates more towards the passenger side.
