• Just finished my tape of Chris LeDoux, about to reminisce of 1980s Colorado...
• Never have had a vehicle fire before; 4 July is close as I had fireworks and flames coming from underneath the hood; put out fire, quickly disconnect and remove all wiring.
• Jeep passes me and laughs.

• 10 year old 1-gauge wiring shield apparently will eventually fail and arc through a nearby ground.
• Time to get a few hundred-amp fuse on my dual-battery system.
• Even if you have an auxiliary battery, always carry jumper cables in case you fry one of your own batteries and connecting cables alike.

• Stopped to help same Jeep southbound on the Million $ Highway, they lost their axle on the way down.

Small world it is. Several hundred miles South and a day later too. It was a Cherokee (are they semi-float axles?) and looks like the c-clip failed around a turn and the whole wheel inside rear half-shaft slid out, there was a large groove where the hub made road contact and slid the truck to the edge. If you know CO Hwy550, they were very lucky indeed to not have gone over an edge.

Glad you got the fire out quickly before things got worse.

I have a couple 150A fuses inside in-line fuse holders on my dual battery wiring.

I got them from Hellroaring. There towards the bottom of this page.

Yep, they are.

I was looking through an older Petersens and there's a kind of cool emergency tool that will hold the axle shaft (with the attatched tire) in the axle tube should your C-Clip's fail. Picture a bar that has rollers around it that literaly straps aty the ends to your frame and rolls along the side-wall of the tire keeping the tire and axle shaft in place so you can limp home.

I never had it happen to me with any of my cherokee's but I can attest to how bad it can leave you stranded when it does (frinds TJ left him in a bad way...)
