Tri-fold RTT?

I love the roof top tents and can't wait to purchase one for the family. The idea or question I have is: For those that have longer based vehicles like the Ford Excursions, has anyone thought about making a tri fold tent that will hang off the back but, go further towards the front? I guess it could also be an extra long bi-fold tent. I am just asking. I think the extra room might come in handy if it would not over load the roof itself. Make it wide enough and it could sleep 4 to 6 people. Might be great for familes.

Dwight

This actually seems like a pretty good idea. I am envisioning a RTT that could be six or seven feet long, running lengthwise on the roof of the vehicle, and opening up to both sides of the vehicle to a width of eight feet or even more. This is somewhat like what my Jumping Jack tent does on the trailer. The advantage to such a tent is that you could actually get a family of four or five into it, rather than being limited to one that holds only two or three people. I haven't ever seen a RTT like that, but can definitely see a market for one.

A tri-fold would be interesting, but extremely challenging. Getting the hinge and the baseboard straight is all fine and good; it's what happens to the fabric when you fold it all that is tricky. You may end up having to do so much precise stuffing of the fabric that it becomes a lengthy process to pack away, and you still expose fabric to edges and hinges. The Jumping Jack, remember, has a huge empty space in which to hold all the now collapsed fabric; a RTT not so much.

Having said that, to indulge me, Howling Moon makes the biggest RTT available on the market. A massive 2.4m! That means, when opened, it is almost 8ftx8tf!

they did twin RTT's in long way down in 2007. seemed to work good for them, dont they have double wide ones now?

Tri Fold Roof Top

Take a look at the trifold I'm designing and building. It needs a little more work but is very close.

8 x 12 been using the proto. all summer. Few bugs to work out then its ready. It will fit nice on Jeep or FJ etc. if you don't have a trailer to put it on.
