Price is CDN. . . here’s your chance to buy a rare triple-knob 4WD Vanagon Syncro Westfalia with engine conversion and upgrades galore for under $50k USD.
1987 Triple Knob VW Syncro, recently rebuilt 2.5 Subaru Small Car engine conversion, Coast Mountain Hightop, 930 CVs, FOX 4WD adjustable shocks, AirTop 2000ST Webasto heater, truck fridge, CLK rims, Westy interior, ARB awning . . . . and loads more extras. This is a turn-key, well-maintained, well-loved Syncro ready for its next adventures.
This van routinely has its three knobs pulled and for ten years we've been getting out there and back with no problems and no headaches. We took the original version of this van around Europe, Canada, and the USA, and re-bodied it during the COVID pandemic. During that process almost everything mechanical was replaced, upgraded, or rebuilt . . . . powerflex bushings right up to the Dometic window and Fantastic Fan in the insulated hightop.
2.5 Subaru engine had a full top end rebuild in 2020 by Rocket Rally Racing, the tranny was rebuilt by Gary Zinc in 2017, new GW driveshaft in 2021, 930 CVs, Fox 4WD shocks, Webasto heater, and T3 swaybar new 2020, recently powdercoated CLK rims, GW bumpers, RMW swing-away arm, and loads more recent work and upgrades in the last few years.
The inside is a retrofitted Westy interior with some small modifications that work for us: we removed the headbanger and halved the rear cabinet in the rear when we installed the hightop – more light, more room, same amount of useable storage, and it really optimizes the space with the 'Westy Lounge' rear bench arrangement. A fully insulated Coast Mountain Hightop with Dometic Window, Fantastic Fan, outdoor marine-grade wall carpet, and Westy upper bed was installed in 2020. LED lights throughout the interior. The Webasto heater absolutely cooks us in the winter and dries out damp gear. Instead of installing the propane kit under the van we installed an adaptor that runs from the kitchen stove under the cabinets and uses standard small green bottles. The Truck Fridge makes ice. A GW LifePo 50w AUX battery and inverter keeps laptops/cameras/phones charged.
The body is pretty clean but comes with well-earned PNW pin striping and some minor rust in the usual spots. There is a typical amount of seam rust on the rear quarter panels and foot wells, and the front nose has some surface rock chips that will need to be addressed. The bodywork required is not extensive – we did our best to keep it clean and prevent things from getting worse but our plan was always to use and enjoy the van without feeling like we had to be precious about its condition. Not trying to hide anything, can send detailed photos.
We have gotten more 'drive more, worry less' out of this vehicle than we deserve. I'm aware looking at the list of upgrades that we've paid for this level or reliability, but this van is a good one at its core. This is a family van that has given us 10 years of proper adventure and memories … it's time for someone else to get the same use out of it as we have over the years. Lots more adventure in her and ready to hit the road today. Regularly maintained and serviced by reputable mechanic, who was also the previous owner.
Located in Comox, Vancouver Island, BC. $60,000 Canadian dollars. Message with any questions or requests for specific photos. This is not a showroom, museum-piece Syncro. This van has seen the world and if you are looking to get out and get after it in a classic rig, this is the one.
