Trooper manual hub question

I find that there are warn and superwinch hubs still available for these rigs.

The years that they fit seem to stop at 1993 (first gen trooper)

I've found a few sources that basically say that all trooper front ends are 17 spline and that the hubs will fit 99% of the way on the axle, save for the end of the axle that has to have a certain type of end to fit the WARN brand hubs...

I know that I could search for Aisin brand hubs, but not exactly sure where.

Anyone have direct experience?

Here's the part numbers I find:

Warn # 61385 - $225.00-ish
Superwinch # 400533 $125.00-ish

Both of those are available on Amazon, etc.

Thanks.

I had the Superwinch hubs on my 2001. Gained 1mpg!

Just from my general experience with Dana type axles and Japanese axles using Aisin hubs, Finding some used Aisins and rebuilding them is worth while. I have Superwinch hubs on the Tracker, but I didn't put them on.

Ok, great. thanks Scott and Squatchout...

I'm a WARN man, having run them before on two different rigs, but I'm definitely considering the Aisin's on Independent4x's, and superwinch's as well.

10-4 on the snap rings. Just one per side, correct? I'll have to find my snap ring pliers. Haven't used them in a while..haha.

Yeah, I've had trucks with factory Aisin's that never had an issue, and I've put WARN premium's on as an upgrade on a similar vehicle to the trooper to save wear and tear on the 4x4 system as well as bump mpg's a bit. Same thing, no issues.

Good to hear that the superwinches are good values, too, though.

Warn premium - $239.00
Superwinch - $134.00
Aisin (used) - $150.00

Not to sound like a shill, but the WARN hubs do have a limited lifetime warranty.

Don't hesitate to PM me if you've got any question about the product, too. (Or you can post here!)

Hey, Andy, I do have a question. Why does the application chart stop at 1993 for troopers? I've confirmed through a handful of sources that they do in fact fit up to MY2002 troopers as all troopers have the 10 bolt front IFS axle from 1987-up.

Would I run the risk of not being covered under that warranty by using the hubs on a vehicle not listed on the application chart?

Thanks, as always, for being a great resource to us portal'rs. :)

That was the last year the truck came with manual hubs. After that, they were fitted with drive flanges (in most configurations and most markets). They bolt right on. . .

I have seen a number of Superwinch hubs grenade in Moab. Now, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Some folks prefer that their hubs act as a "fuse" and go before something more critical/expensive breaks. Which is fine, as long as you have packed a spare hub.

That said, I have wheeled Troopers vigorously for 6+ years with Aisin hubs and nary a problem. Downside to Aisins is no warranty, but I have not needed one thus far...

Well, honestly, no matter which manual hub I get I'll likely have the stock drive flanges in the truck, so I should be good there if the splines on the CV at the hub are still good-to-go

I agree, having seen the prices for CV work on this truck for both parts and labor, I do NOT want to have to get into that part of the rig, $-wise.

Speaking of fuse in the system. Do you know if WARN or anyone else still puts out a "hub fuse" kit?

I put a set on another rig. Felt good knowing I had the regular hub in my tool bag if I needed to change out a stripped set of "fuses"

Personally I don't really subscribe to the "fuse" theory...running 35s I broke three CVs in the first few years, but all were preventable situations I have learned from, and have not broken one in several years by driving smarter. But if I do break one I get salvage yard replacements for $25-40 around here already pulled, and can swap the outer part of the CV assembly (usually it is the outer joint that breaks) in a couple of hours, not a big deal.

10-4, thanks for your insights.

After thinking about it, I think with the types of terrain I intend to wheel on, Aisin's or WARN's are gonna be my choice, without too much worry about breakage other than keeping my drive flanges available just in case.

I'm out of town for a few weeks soon, so I'll probably pull the trigger on a set when I get back. :)
