Tuffy console in a 60/62

I saw that the OJ guys are building a 60 up and I noticed a Tuffy console in it. My wife is following the build and would like a console like that for her 62.

I have a couple questions for those that have done this.

Does it interfere with the rear heater? Does it interfere with the park brake? Does it interfere with the locker handles? What model did you use?

Thanks,

Hey Dave,

The 62 is a bit different, but I can tell you what I know so far.

I got the 8" model with the radio/stereo compartment, and it is great - wow, do I NOT miss the dumb old plastic one. Height is perfect. Installation was not complex. It's completely overbuilt.

It does not interfere with the parking brake; I think it's in the same place as a 62 but not sure (mine is a manual, the 62s are automatic). As for the heater, mine does not have a rear heater. Locker handles - don't know about that.

I may have other issues, though, when I get the truck back from TLC - the new transmission (a five speed) is in a different place, so the console probably will be, too. Not sure.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but when I get it back I can measure the base for you and you can see if the footprint will work. With the rear risers, you can change the fit quite a bit.

Roseann, I just saw your 60 at TLC. It is coming along nicely! I tried to "accidentally" place your Columbus on my 62 but the TLC guys were really anal about not letting me rob your vehicle for parts. Go figure.

For the center console, I put the Tuffy in my 62 and it fits really well. It isn't a standard "bolt in" project, but not hard by any means. If you do a search over on Mud, there are quite a few write-ups, mine included. I have no interference with my shifter, even when I go all the way to "L". I had to make a little bracket to bolt the console onto on top of the rear heater, and the temp control for the rear heater had to be rebent to clear the Tuffy. I have some pics of the install, but I'll have to dig around for them. As far as shifters for cable lockers, I can't say because I'm running ARB's. From the photos I've seen of the cable lockers in a 6x model, I don't think a Tuffy would work (at least the 8 or 10 inch model).

Let me pile on the console issue.

Did you notice any heat issues with the 2M radio I saw mounted in there in OJ?

Thanks,

Haven't used it enough to tell. I've only driven the vehicle by myself since the install, then it went right to TLC (without the radio - sounds like we gotta watch some sticky fingers there ;-) . Maybe I'll take the radio over at the end of this month, and on the drive home I'll chat with some truckers (not).

I'll let you know but likely it will be October before it gets some longterm radio use.

Thanks for the quick response. I can wait.

After reading through Kevin Rowland's ROTW thread on 'Mud, it looks like a Tuffy should have no problems fitting with the factory cable lockers. Kevin's handles are positioned directly behind the parking brake.

tuffy in a 62...

my gray FJ 62 is at TLC now on consignment, and it has the cable lockers and the tuffy fits just fine. I've had tuffys on both my TLC-built 62's.
The only tight point is at the front where the NV 4500 shifter comes close to a tall cup in the cupholder. I added a rear cupholder for those really tall cups and for the rear seat folks.

They've got a bunch of nice projects under way at the TLC shop, including Roseann's truck :)
