Tundra the next expedition vehicle?

If you can't 'tell all' here, do we have a OJ review to look foreward too? :)

I saw that too. I think the DC short bed has a 128-in. wheelbase not 140?

I believe the Tacoma 06 specs are based on the long bed.. the short bed slightly different..

Yes the 06 specs are for the longbed. I really made the list with myself and my family in mind and therefore only considered the longbed. Then this thread came up so I thought the list may be appropriate to the subject at hand. I really added the older Tacoma only as a comparison to the newer one.

Shortbed DC Tacoma
Length.......... 208.1
Bed length..... 60.3
Wheelbase..... 127.8
Approach....... 35
Departure...... 26
Breakover...... 21
Weight...........4080

Thanks for sharing that update Jim. That 128-in. (127.8) number stuck in my head when I was researching my Toyota purchase because it was only a few inches shorter than my first long-bed, regular-cab '93 diesel pickup, which was 131-inch wheelbase.

Anyone else have any real world expedition input on this vehicle?

What are the real mpg numbers?

There are a few customizing products out for the Tundra - ARB, Donahoe, Demello, fourwheelcampers

Any other mod products to be aware of?

I have the 07 Tundra, double cab, longbed, 5.7L, 4x4, 6 spd auto. TRD option and limited trim not available with the longbed.

I mostly drive up and down (and round and round) the mountain in this truck – not a lot of highway miles to date. I’m getting 13.6 MPG when I use auto, ~14.8 MPG in manual.

It’s a nice ride, very comfy interior, lots of power and people DO get out of your way :) . The bed used to have quite a bit of bounce on the notorious I-10 near Palm Springs, but since I added the Flippac it does much better – it seems to like that extra 350 lbs of weight back there.

The wheelbase on mine is 164.6”, overall length is 247.6”. Width is 79.7” - a bit more than second gen Tundra (75.2”/doublecab) , but not much bigger than the 07 Tacoma (72.2”/doublecab - 74.6"/crewcab). Specs for the various configs can be found at http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/2007-toyota-tundra-3.htm

I also have a 99 F150 5.4L XLT, x-cab, reg bed, 3” lift. The Tundra seems much bigger, esp when driving it ... but now that I’m looking it’s only 1.3” wider than my F150. When we take both of them offroad/camping I swear it gets 10x more scratches than the Ford. Maybe it’s that the Tundra is black and the F150 is well-worn in and white. Hmmmm.

Only problem I’ve had to date is the tailgate linkage, replaced once in Sept and actually spent waaaaaay too long today at the dealer having it repaired again. There are some known tailgate issues with the Tundra, you can’t put significant weight on it, or it crumples and/or falls off ?? I haven’t had that happen but I haven’t loaded any ATVs into mine either. There was also a recent recall on 15,600 units regarding issues with the prop shaft: http://nhthqnwws112.odi.nhtsa.dot.go...7V579-8504.pdf

The most annoying thing is the seatbelt chime, “illegal” to disable because somehow tied to airbag deployment, but folks have found a way – info at http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/tundra/107489-diy-how-to-disable-seatbelt-chime/ There is actually a lot of good information on this forum, but be prepared to wade through hip-deep-posturing to find it.

I’d be really interested in seeing what aftermarket products you find :jumping: they seem to be somewhat limited so far. I had a hard time finding any shells it a few months ago - ARE and FWC made the only ones at the time I was looking. But the Flippac worked out great, pretty happy with it. I looked at the ARB combination bumper (want a winch) but the way the hood lifts up makes any beefy bumper require a lot more vehicle clearance than I like. Hopefully more options coming out ... The only other thing I've done to date is swap the highway-only tires that come with the non-TRD package for BFG ATs 285/65/18s - that helped the ride alot, esp cornering and in snow!

I’d like to see the results of Scott’s test too!!

Dude,

FWIW...(and I know this isn't the focus of your thread/inquiry, but it figures into your decisions no doubt)...I think you can get another 50K nearly trouble free miles out of your Tacoma...which you've considered I'm sure. I have 154K on my '98 Taco...it's only in the last 4K miles that I've had some issues - had to replace the O2 sensor to pass CA smog (may not be an issue in AZ) and last week one of the rear sealed wheel bearings went bad and had to be replaced. ($500). Other than that I've had no problems and expenses have been limited to major tune-ups...plus replacing the water pump at 130K.

Oh and there's this really nice looking Tundra DC shortbed TRD with an ARB bumper, winch and BFG ATs sitting on the lot at Rosners Toyota in Fredericksburg.

Found this digging around for my own build thread :D.

Scott, is the test on a 2nd-gen Tundra? Whichever, looking forward to it :D!

Desertdude...with my 1st-gen (2000) I have consistently gotten 17-18 mpg crossing the flatlands at ~70-75mph on 3.91 (stock) gears and 35" tires, and 19mpg between 65-70mph. Stock I saw the same numbers mentioned earlier, 20-22 unless I was all over the throttle. It is essentially a 1st-gen Tacoma with more cab space, larger bed, and bigger engine. The running gear is the same.

About the only thing you can't get off the shelf for a 1st-gen is a snorkel :p.

Unless you need/want the power of a 5.7L or the space of the 1st-gen...you already have a great truck in that Tacoma :).

You should definitely do it, I've got an 2002 SR5 access cab tundra and I've loved every waking moment off and on road with it.

I'm keeping it for life.
Excellent truck!

About 15 mpg with 285/75/16's, stock gearing.

The 4.7 still haulls ***, and I believe I have seen snorkel mods for first gen tundras, they gotta be out there.
