Turbo whistle from non-turbo FZJ80

This has me confused. New intake boot (so says the previous owner - it IS soft and pliable) many vacuum lines replaced, air box screwed in nice and tight and a SNORKEL to boot.

ISSUE: intake whistle starts about 2800 RPM and gains volume and pitch with increased RPM. Does not occur at slight partial throttle and very soft and cursing speeds. Most noticeable underway.

Any ideas?

what kind of snorkel do you have? sometimes they make noise...

are you sure the noise is from the intake?

try removing the complete intake and listen to any sounds... start putting parts in, and when it sounds, that is the part that has the problem....

its the exhaust at the tailpipe. I shortened my exhaust tip on my 80 and it made it even more pronounced. If you search exhaust whistle on ih8mud.com there are quite a few threads on it. Justin

Another vote here for exhaust. Mine has whistled since I bought it, even before my snorkel.

While accelerating up the Vincent Thomas bridge I was trying to pass a big rig and was really giving the LC gas like it was free. I had the turbo whine very clear and pronounced. For a split second I thought I had a turbo installed! Back to reality. Nice to know the consensus is an exhaust whine and not some huge vacuum leak. :)

I actually use my exhaust whistle as an alarm of sorts to keep me off of heavy throttle in the city, in order keep my MPG up (relatively).

I agree with several post here related to the exhaust as the issue, but lets qualify where the sound is generated, as some have suggested the resonator at the tail-pipe, and your suggestions for the issue are up front and under the hood. What is the overall condition of the exhaust system? OEM Y-pipes are know for the developing leaks where the 2 down pipes converge into the single down pipe. This is where I would recommend starting your troubleshooting and simple visual inspection will allow you to determine if a weld is missing in this area, if this is the case, weld it (remember OEM exhaust system are stainless) and see if this quiets the whistle....Keep us posted.

Just here...
You are all wrong. This was obviously installed by the PO

I dont think it has anything to do with the resonator. The purpose of the resonator is to lesson the sound of the exhaust as it exits the tail pipe. I cut mine off and the "turbo" noise is much louder than before.

Vango mentions the oem exhaust is stainless steel. Is this accurate? I believe my 80 still has the factory exhaust and it is very rusty. I don't recall ever seeing stainless rust before! Is the resonator at the tail pipe or actually one of the two "cats"? Mine has had the tailpipe shortened and I don't know if there was something removed other than "pipe".

.....just leading the troubleshooting back upfront and under the hood, the OP issue seems to imply this area.
