A company in Texas, of all places, is planning to offer the use of a home charging station for electric vehicles for a flat rate of $60 to $80 a month. NRG Electric's plan includes access to charging stations located in public places around Houston as part of the flat rate fee.

My daily driver uses $50 worth of gas to travel about 300 miles, so the flat rate plan looks attractive if you drive 20 miles a day or more.

A company in Texas, of all places...

There have been energy companies in Texas for a long time now...this is no surprise to me. Sure, there's oil here. But there is also a lot of natural gas, solar, and wind power too.

Thanks for this post. I think this would be an interesting product for the future of electric automobiles.

I guess I was surprised that the home charger trial would take place in Houston, rather than Seattle or Portland. There must be more energy-conscious drivers in Texas than I imagined.

It's not clear to me why more electric vehicles or hybrids don't have the ability to recharge by plugging in to a home electric circuit. It's not that expensive to have a 220V outlet installed in your garage.
