Tying flys

My son who is 8 y/o bought a fly tying kit recently, when the kit arrived he immediately went to work using whatever materials he could scrounge up around the house. The end result was pretty impressive for a kid who has never tied a fly before.
My dad makes custom fly reels and gave my son a reel a few years ago and my son has been hooked on fly fishing ever since. I'll try and get some pictures of the his creations.

Just a proud dad spouting off:sombrero:

Here is what he made last night. He found some old paint brushes and thread and made it work until we buy some feathers and fur.

Really great, Kellymoe. Wow! Eight years old. He'll be getting orders soon.

You have a fantastic experience ahead of you, and that is when your son releases the first fish he hooks on his own fly.

Very cool.

I don't know if it's still there but there used to be a place in the valley (on Burbank or Magnolia, I think....maybe west of Van Nuys Blvd?) that sold fly fishing tackle and had a very nice assortment of fly tying parts. My wife used to shop there as much as at the clothes store (she's into tying, herself).

That's about the age I was when I started tying. Still at it, but have improved my skills a bit. Take your son to Bob Marriott's - Bob Marriott's Flyfishing Store - 2700 W. Orangethorpe Ave., Fullerton, CA 92833 Buy him some lessons. Better yet, take some tying/casting lessons with him...:victory:

Very cool!

I was around that age when I started tying flies. We'd tie all winter (grew up in Colorado @ 8,500'), fish all spring/summer/fall. Didn't have the $$$ to buy retail, so, like your son, we made due with what we had (although we were known to hijack a few things out of Dads kit . . . ).
