Underseat, secure lock box?

I'm interested to see solutions people have come up with for secure, lockable storage for items like important documents, money, a handgun, etc. in their vehicles. I'm considering both removable or fixed boxes.

I'm building out a Chevy Express cargo van to be a light campervan and one thing it really lacks is lockable storage. It doesn't have a glovebox and the storage bin on the doghouse doesn't have a lock. I plan to put in some cabinetry that could have locks but something metal and bolted to metal is more of what I'm thinking. The driver's seat is power adjustable so there is too much under there to mount anything. Under the passenger seat is a possibility.

I'm looking at solutions like the Smittybuilt 2746 box:

.....or since I'm decently handy, I've considered modifying a .50 cal ammo can. There are lock kits available for the ammo cans as well as homebrewed solutions. I would just have to come up with a way to cleanly install it.

Thanks!

I've been considering lockable storage for some time for our blazer. I'm also wanting to install a 2m radio in the box. I've been hording my lunch money for a Tuffy Security Console. We use them for work and they are stout. Not sure if it would work in your van with the engine shroud.

I have used one of these in my old 4runner. It worked pretty well. It was cabled to the seat, big enough for one pistol and was portable so you could toss the whole setup in a backpack and take it with you if you wanted. I've been looking for a hard mounted system for my tacoma, but havent found one that fits under my narrow seat.

I have one of these leashed to my seat mounts. Probably a bit small for your needs. It's just big enough for a full-size auto and an extra clip with eggcrate-style foam on both sides. Not my ideal secure storage (saving pennies for the Tuffy Console Box), but it's very well hidden under the seat. This positioning of the leash and the box was just for a picture...

Lemme see if I can remember where I got this thing. There might be something bigger...

a friend of mine has one similar to what you posted in his Ram, it's the type that reads finger prints and he has it mounted under his seat. He keeps his CCW pistol in it when going places he can't carry.

I have this in my TJ and it works great, you could modify the brackets for your application.

Thanks TJguzzy and 85CUCV, I had forgotten about Tuffy products.

I like the looks of this box on drawer runners. I looked it up and is 17"L the length of it closed or with the drawer open? I measured the opening under the seat and it would have to be 12" closed (didn't measure how much clearance I had in front). This one may be too long due to how they made the seat frame.

I have the non flip seat so I could fit the 17" one, but they also make a 13" one. the 17 measurement is the length of the drawer.

http://www.tuffyproducts.com/p-286-...eal-carry-security-drawer-with-flip-seat.aspx

SPECIFICATIONS:
Part #250 Color: 01 Black Drawer Exterior Dimensions: 12 13/16” L, 6” W, 3” H Interior Dimensions : 12 3/8” L, 4 13/16” W, 2 1/2” H (1 13/16” Clearance under latch bracket)

What is the outside-to-outside dimension of the mounting tabs? If the box is 6" wide, I'm guessing that dimension is close to 12"? That may be wide enough to reach my seat bolts.

I'm guessing its the same width mounting plate as mine because it ties into the seat bolts, I'll have to measure when I get home.
