I guess this is in keeping with the statement that this was built
as a prototype for the military. Otherwise, why make the
vehicle weigh hundreds of pounds more than necessary?

Bremerton WA is fairly close to Fort Lewis. Maybe the builder
was friends with the folks who run the motor pool, and had
access to parts from wrecked military vehicles.
