update to iPod Touch makes it relevant again

After languishing for three years without any attention, the iPod Touch has been given an upgrade. The new model contains many hardware features of the current iPhone 6, while employing a smaller 4 inch, 1136x640 screen. This is the display used by the iPhone 5 and 5s models. With 326 dots per inch, this screen is considered of "retina" quality by Apple.

Both articles contain interesting use cases. Still no GPS in the iPod Touch, however.

If you're looking for a pocket size computing device that doesn't include cell phone capability, it might make more sense to purchase a one year old unlocked Android phone, and use it without a cell phone contract.

For example, you can buy an unlocked Moto E for $120 direct from Motorola. That gives you Android 5.0, 8 GB storage with 32 GB expansion slot, and GPS. If you later decide that you want to use the device with a cell phone contract, the Moto E has LTE capability. Motorola is expected to announce new phones on July 28, so this model may be discounted further.
