Upper Peninsula Winter

We had a nice sunset this evening. The camera was acting a fool in the cold weather, but I tried :)

Pic doesn't do it justice, the way the snow was falling through the setting sunlight was pretty awesome.

Nice! How are the smaller inland lakes doing in your neck of the woods, are they frozen solid yet? I'm heading up to the Sault this week, and there a couple areas I'd like to check on foot, but which are dependent on the ice thickness.

I've spent the last couple of weeks primarily on Grand Island in Munising Bay. We don't get winter access for two long, especially when warm spells come though; we can lose the ice over night in the channel.

I had the opportunity to take two of Pure Michigan's Travel Writers out to the island for assignments in the U.P. We had a great day for the ride, completing a full circle of the island on 2-10-11 (on the island, not the ice).

Some photos from the ride and scouting, most of which are just iPhone shots:

When Kristian and I went over a couple weeks ago. You can see the ice shelf in the background that the climbers for Michigan Ice Fest like to hit.

A few more:

50-60 foot tall ice curtains on the North Shore of Grand Island. The climbers, during the Michigan Ice Fest dream of getting to Grand Island's North & West shores to climb.

Looking west from the West Rim Trail of Grand Island. You can see the smoke stacks of Marquette, MI in the right section of the pic.

Sunset last night at Sand Point. Notice the cracks in the ice. There is probably 3+ feet of ice on the bay right now.

And a video to prove it was windy. Sorry, can't prove it was cold :D

Great thread. well captured series. I'm glad I am enjoying your winter through your images though and not freezing my tail off there. :sombrero:

Thanks, Brad.

I feel naked without my 40d though. I like the iPhone Panos, but would really like to try some HDR with some of the winter scenes. Guess I need to send it in to Canon for repair. Can't justify upgrading right now.

Took a short 30 minute drive. The NW winds from yesterday's storm really piled up the pack ice on the shore in AuTrain. There are huge new mountains of ice now.

This was Free Fishing Weekend in the State of MI. There was a fishing derby on AuTrain Lake but I waited too late in the day to get out there. There are usually a ton of ice-fishermen on the lake.

And I wasn't going to stop at the Annie River (where it enters Munising Bay) on the way home but am glad I did. It was cool to see the shacks piled up from the storm last night. There were about a dozen shacks on the shore like this. A Shackrifice.

Well, I'm getting by with a little help from my friends. Waiting until after taxes :coffee: to gauge the 5D mkii. I'm using a good friends Nikon for now.

Winter won't be around much longer up here. What a teaser...
Side note: HDR is interesting in the winter. :)

Wagner Falls near Munising. Camera is just above the collection pool, which is really just a big ice bowl. There were so many gnarly formations of ice you could study the waterfall for hours wondering how it all formed.

You can see the ice bowl at the bottom in this pic, and the frost covered pine that I tried to catch the sunlight behind up and to the right.

I'm loving this thread.:wings: A bunch of great captures.

The Wagner Falls shot might have been even better with a ND filter to increase the exposure and frost out the water movement.

But what do I know? I live where there is no water or ice.

Hey

Nice Pics. I used to live in Harvey, MI in the late eighties, where we rented a house on Lake Superior and I worked for American Eagle Airlines out of Negaunee. I enjoyed Marquette, Ishpeming and Gladstone also; good times and lots of logging roads, great hunting and fishing!

Well, I'm afraid the plug is getting pulled on winter this week. Was mid-50's yesterday. We did manage to get in one last ride late Wednesday, found some good now and made the best of it.

And on Tuesday we had Klaus Scherer of German TV come into town to do a story on Iverson Snowshoes so I got to take them out at sunrise to the Lake Superior shoreline and waterfalls after that. Pretty cool to see interest in the U.P. from Germany!

i like how they had a sound person there to record the frozen waterfall

haha... fair enough observation!

the water was actually flowing pretty well, you can see the opening at the top, it makes for an odd sound. the ravine has really cool acoustics believe it or not.

And since this forum is also for "videography" and I put at LEAST 3 transitions in here :coffeedrink: ... I'll share a little video.

It almost hit 50 last saturday. One of those T-shirt riding days you wished had a pause button.
