Urban Legend or Tech

So, this is a true story - not heard from a friend of a friend - but from the guy that sold it. The tech is at the very end so if that is what you are after skip there.

I was talking to a co-worker that I only occasionally talk to due to being in different departments and the size of our company. I noticed he was driving a newer 2005+ Tacoma quad cab so when I saw him today I asked about his 2001 Tacoma quad 4x4 he had. He proceeds to tell me a story about the engine blowing smoke (200k miles) so after hearing from Tunex that a top end rebuild would be $2300 and deciding that is not something he was really interested in, he puts it on the local for sale site - get your tissue ready cause this is a tear jerker - for $1500.00 :Wow1:- that's right the decimal is in the right spot. He figures it is all its worth due to the engine issue. The sucky part is I saw it right after he posted and I thought it was a misprint or scam so didn't call. Two guys showed up and the bidding war drove the price to $2500 when they decided to flip a coin. One guy drove home a TRD (rear locker too!) and was a very happy man.

When he was done telling me the story I told him to call me when he is ready to sell his "new" 2007.

Here is the (well sorta) tech - what should a top end rebuild cost, what does a crate engine cost (3.4L) and how long do you think it will take for the guy to put it in?

I would of joined in the bidding war too even though I'm not in the market for another vehicle. I'm surprised that the seller wanted so little. Guess he was in a hurry to sell. I would of thought it was a scam also though.

I wouldn't do a top end, rather find a low mile 5VZ and swap it in. They can be had for $500-1500 with anywhere from 50k to 100k range. AllTruck here in SLC is a great source for low mileage powerplants.

No need to swap an engine, just post it up on here and TTORA and flip that truck for $7500! Or, start cutting on it and have a damn nice crawler for a couple grand!:smiley_drive:

Smart guy - just not car smart. THinks engine is the main value - he was happy with selling and what he bought. 2007 Quad 4x4 TRD 30k miles. $16500. Another good deal.

I would've dropped a good engine in and driven it.
