Ursa Minor Pop-Top Jeep JK

Sorry for the multiple posts. As for the ideal solution, here's what AluCab in Southafrica makes for Defenders. That kind of flap that opens up at the end would be perfect for the J30. Keep the sun and the water out, while allowing you to also keep windows open and circulate fresh air

Which takes me to something I've been wanting to email John about for a while: Man, for as much as I love the J30, how convenient it is and how much it has made me love my wrangler even more, I despise the J30 tent Windows design. This design is a small evolution front the Ecampers where clearly it made more sense. However on the wrangler, it'd be so much easier to also be able to get in and out from the back climbing onto the spare wheel. The panorama opening thing all the way to the center is a nice touch, but it's very impractical. In 3 years, I've opened the top all the way to the center a total of 3 times. The rest of the time is mostly just on the sides, and every time I use the camper I wish I had also an opening on the back. Maybe all you need is to figure out a way to ALSO open the windows from the center in the back?

Being able to get access to the camper top from the back seat inside is priceless don't ever think about removing that option. But also being able to go in and out from any side would be a huge thing added to that. Specially when there's 2 people sleeping on top and getting out would mean quick single zip action, then climb down through the spare wheel, instead of doing a bunch of contortionist moves to make enough space to lift up the lid under your butt.

If you think you can come up with a tent design that matches or tops what the AluCab guys are doing below, please sign me up for another J30 - I think my wife will be very happy with her own.

Last thing! Dan: here's more inspiration for you. Once you get that huge space inside your camper, I think an internal front hinged platform that can move up against the top when you want more internal space will be a lot more useful than 3 independent planks that you stack all the way in the front. With the internal hinged platform all your bedding, sleeping bag and pillows can stay in place and with the help of properly balanced struts you can push the whole thing up with one finger.

Good luck with your build! Keep posting build progress here. If you get it right, I think I might even be next in line with one of those. Can't ever get enough Ursas!

Hey man, Thanks for all the info.

I agree with you that a single "hinged" platform would be the ultimate.
In fact, here is a quick video I emailed John about 18 months ago with exactly that in a Troopie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NwXAQEQbkU&t=10m6s
(Just watch ~20 seconds)

The main problem is that a JK is not long enough to be able to stand "behind" the hinged platform like that, and still have the bed be long enough (I'm 6"2').
I suppose I could hinge it down then still crawl up into it through a hatch (like the stock J30), but I don't think I love that idea.

Maybe a hinged platform like this for ~2/3 the length of the thing, leaving enough room to climb up into it, then one small panel that must be put down at the back to finish off the bed for full length will work.
I'm not sure we'll have the time and desire to go with a complicated gas strut solution.

We have not yet finalized the solution, we're going to do it when I'm there, my modified roll bar on the Jeep is there and the J30 is in front of us.

Thanks!
-Dan

Makes sense. I'm sure you guys will find the best solution. For Africa, definitely think about keeping rain and sun out with some sort of flap on the back or all around it. It will hugely in crease airflow inside. Best of luck with the build. Keep us posted!

Told Aam1023 I would post a side pic of the manta awning which is a 2.5m awning on the jk with j30

Thanks for that. I will most likely have John mount my awning with the overhang towards the front to make it easier to open the front door inside the awning's enclosure (as mentioned by another poster earlier in the thread). Obviously with the Manta the overhang has to be in the rear.

Photo bomb! JK has come a long way since we got it about a year ago. Camper is sweet, have had like 50 days in it this year.

That second pic is such an optical illusion! The silver Jeep looks so much smaller in all dimensions even though they are both JK's. Crazy!

Was that your j30 jeep all silver at expo? I was camping across the road and walked over with my little one to see it but no one was there. Thing of beauty only one I saw so figuring has to be yours. View attachment 308603

See you got a photo of my flag! How did jeep get in the way? Considering the Ursa myself. How did it hold up at the Underwater Expo?, I mean Overland!LOL!!!

Got my J30 on order...should have it shortly after Thanksgiving! Stand by for reports and pics. A big thanks to those on this thread for the photos and reports. It made my decision to purchase an easy one! Though what to get for options was not so easy. :)

Just took delivery of #140 last Friday. Will have some pics/thoughts up soon. Saw #s 138 and a few of the early 140s under construction as well.
