Ursa Minor Pop-Top Jeep JK

For the wind noise it may becoming from the panels. I took a roll of Insulation foam (the kind that goes doors and windows) and put it in the cracks and then climbed down the side.

That's interesting. Are you able to provide a pic of exactly what you did?

So you have the wiring (I assume from previous hardtop) just not the rear wiper assembly? I bought a wiper assembly without the wiring (didn't do enough research). If you are interested in the rear wiper assembly let me know, I am willing to part with it.

Actually, nothing was included when my vehicle was returned. In fact, it wasn't until I emailed John upon receiving my Jeep that I was told anything about having to reinstall the rear wiper system. That was a bit frustrating to say the least as we've started our rainy season here in Oregon and not having a rear wiper or the defroster was problematic. When I emailed John about it, he sent me a parts list of what I'd need to order to restore that functionality, which I did. Everything is now installed but I have all of the cables sort of just dangling around. Thanks for the offer to sell the assembly, though.

Would you happen to have photos illustrating what you did with the insulation foam? I'd love to give that a shot!

Thanks!

Sorry I don't have pictures. I will get some next time I have top open (may be awhile as I am elbow deep replacing cv axle on my other jeep).

It is really nothing special I took http://www.lowes.com/pd_66679-81-02295___?productId=1096047&pl=1&Ntt=foam+seal crawled up top and stuffed the foam in the crevices between the two panels (in the center, where they split) and the crevices in the front. Stops the wind coming in but have to redo it every time you put the panels down.

Hey Stefan, Could I see more detail about the Orfab spare mount, and swing? (maybe post it in another thread?) Sorry for the off topic, but I'm looking for a solution for a spare tire, etc. How do you like the swing, basket, etc...?

I have a black Rubi as well, yours has me drooling :)

TIA!
Bryan

Thanks for the detailed pictures, now you have me even more undecided. I'd like a jerry can upside down for camp water and was leaning towards LOD

Hi Bryan,

I really like my Orfab tire carrier it seems sturdy enough and I really like the Rotopac Gas can /water can . I have a rotopac lock box (black) that I keep my portable 12volt shower hose accessory inside for a quick shower or to clean off whatever equipment I used that day. I like the Garvin basket rack als well. I had some LED light mounts welded to the lower bar of the rack for my backup or backoff ! lights along with a reverse camera . The Orfab spare tire mount sits higher than stock so visability out the rear window is even less .but the always on rear camera helps . I recently installed backup sensors in the bumper for parking in those tricky parking spaces . Anyways so far so good .

Any updates on the water and wind noise issues? I am very close to ordering one but now very hesitant, we take long road trips and water and air leaks are a non starter.

I think the important thing to consider is that a camper top like this is a rather custom job and will require you to be resourceful enough to "tweak" it. I've owned both a Gen1 and then Gen2 top. Therefor, I can say the latest mold is much better, but not a perfect "factory fit". It's still alot lighter weight and better performing than a factory top/rack/RTT combo, IMHO. I too have had the occasional minor leak and unpleasant noises, but that does not detract from my very positive review of the top overall. I still feel the top is predominately water tight and has kept me dry in serious multi-day and 2in/hr rain storms. Any issue I've experienced, I addressed with simple adjustments or the addition of some seam sealant and 3M foam tape.

@Ericwc - Hope to see you around. There are a few of us Coloradians that have them and the Rocky Mountain Overland meetups are a good place for seeing a Ursa Minor jeep in person.

I've driven across country with mine several times now in pretty much every kind of weather. I've had zero water issues. I've *occasionally* had wind noise coming through the pop-out panels, but if that happens it's usually only just after I've popped the top and crawled up there. It seems almost as if when the panels sit for a day they make a better seal. Or if you keep your sleeping bag up there, that might be enough pressure to do the same.

The problem I'm experiencing is that the top is occasionally rubbing on the frame of the Jeep somewhere, causing a high pitched squeaking noise when I hit bumps. It comes and goes in multiple areas, seemingly dependent on temperature/humidity/etc. Sometimes it doesn't do it at all. I need to get someone to ride around with me for a couple hours diagnosing it as I can't exactly do so myself when driving! Otherwise I might just try reseating the entire top and see if that helps.

It's not perfect. I'm not sure if something like this *can* be perfect. But I still love it :)

Surprised to hear of some of these issues. My top doesn't leak or make wind noise. Also went over the options list on the webpage a bunch of times. Got everything I wanted just the way I wanted. I had hoped to use my original rear window to save the wiper defroster costs. No such luck as the top uses the previous narrower window. Oh well...

The only glitch was the time delay at the paint shop getting the top painted to match my jeep.

No regrets, just enjoyment.

Can you post some pics/commentary of how you dealt with leaks on your newest generation J30? Mine leaks like a sieve (nothing minor about it, unfortunately) in only modest rain and I seem to be one of the few (if not only) "new" J30 owners to have this issue. John has not been forthcoming with possible solutions; the top was installed in early November by UMV and experienced rain for the first time on Thanksgiving eve. I emailed John immediately with pictures and a detailed explanation and even followed up with a midweek phone call. As of today, a full business week has elapsed and he has only sent me one email asking for more pics. I provided those immediately, and am still waiting for a follow up email or phone call. I certainly didn't expect a response over the holiday weekend, but this indifferent response to a paid customer's problem has been disheartening.

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

You mean the rear hatch window? Unfortunately most of my sounds are coming from the front cabin (in multiple areas usually). But I'll take a glance anyways, thanks! :)
Hardwick check to be sure rear window is centered if not it will squeak against top

@Bigfish I will look up Rocky Mountain Overland meet ups. Would love to see one in person.
@aam1023 very interested to hear how this turns out for you, hoping John is able to help you figure out the issues.
