One of the beauties of being a Pentax shooter is that I can use just about any of their lenses, no matter the date of manufacture. Film or dslr, it doesn't matter as Pentax mounts really haven't changed. I picked up a fantastic 28mm Chinon macro lens from the late 70s I would wager for 50 bucks yesterday. It fits on my film and digital slrs without an adapter at all. Its rapidly becoming my favorite lens.
Do your research, figure out what you want and then get a good used body and a good used lans. Most kit lenses are actually very good (granted I only have experince with Pentax, not the more common Canikon).
