Used oil storage

Ok so what have you guys come up with as a way to store used oil. My county only takes used oil once a month and it is a long ways away. Over the years I have used the traditional oil storage containers from auto stores, but they always end up leaking. I have got tothe point where I am thinking about spending $ on a sceptor fuel can and remarking it to store oil. I am thinking that this could be good reliable storage plus be easy to empty since it is a designed to fodo so. I just need to get another spout as well.

What are you guys using?

I keep used oil in a 5 gal fuel jug which is clearly labeled with its contents. No leaks, easy to transfer in and out. works great.

I just pour the used oil in an empty 5qt container I get the new oil in. I mark it USED with a Sharpie. I have two 10 minute oil change joints close who will let me dump it in their pit whenever I ask. They will even dispose of the empty jug.

I used to have a 55 gallon drum for waste oil.

When it got full, I had a problem :)

Now I use a 5-gallon can that used to have kero in it. I dump the oil drainer into it via a funnel. Then I pour it into the 5 and 1 qt bottles the oil comes in, and save it for disposal at the parts store.

I use 5 gallon buckets (w/lids). When it is full, I dump it @ the local auto-parts store (free).

I use all my old motor oil to kill weeds around the yard.

Just kidding :p

most auto parts stores take used oil :ylsmoke:

I believe that all autoparts retailers (Walmarts included) are required to have facilities for accepting used oil, but that could just be here in TX.

When I do oil changes, I buy the 4-quart bottle of oil. After draining/filling the engine, I drain the oil change pan into the bottle. It usually ends up fitting the entire quantity of used oil. I also keep antifreeze bottles after a flush/change and use those if needed. I store and transport them in a cardboard box with a garbage bag liner in case one leaks.

The nice thing about using these bottles is that I simply drop them off at the local Autozone and don't have to mess with pouring them out and taking them back home.

1/2 gallon juice bottles (think ocean spray) and i keep them in a rubbermaid roughneck container until i can take them in (my city takes them every saturday). i have never had one of the bottles leak.

this way they just take and dispose of the bottles as well as the oil so i dont have to wait for them to drain it.

I use plastic orange juice containers, milk containers, even 2 liter coke bottles, whatever I have at the moment. Never had one leak.

But I have a couple metal jerry cans that are too rusted inside for fuel use that I'll probably start using instead.

just a note, most auto parts places do not like the use of any container previously used for coolant as contamination is a factor (they get fined)

also, juice and milk containers WILL break down if you neglect to take them in for a bit of time

as far as leaving your containers, most auto parts stores prefer that you do not but many city drop sites require it

ease of use i like 5 gallon buckets with pour spouts, i also like 2.5 gallon jugs from both oil and and solvents like purple power, they hold up really well.... the 5 quart oil change jugs also work great

I put the old oil into the new oil's container after having poured the new oil into the engine. I don't do this by the quart.

My buddy works at a printing house and gets Kodak process 5 gallon containers for me; they're really heavy duty. I wish they were clean, they'd make great water containers I usually fill a couple and take it to the HazMat facility at the landfill.
