Users of Gaia on iOS phones: Old phone or bad Gaia?

For the last month or two (or maybe 3), Gaia maps have been slow to load and I frequently have to switch to airplane mode to make it work with the offline maps stored in my phone. Question: Are these the symptoms of mismanagement at Gaia or is my hardware too old to keep up? It's been 5.5 years since the iPhone Xr was released, but it is still able to use the current OS.

I recently had a long email exchange with GAIA technical support about a failure in syncing the data and downloaded maps onto my iPhone 11 Pro (512 mb) after reinstalling the app in an attempt to regain the level of performance enjoyed previously. After more than a week of trying all the suggested trouble shooting and sending log files, etc. I was informed that “…it is a known issue…” with the app and while they are working on it there is no estimated date for a fix.
My solution was to convert to CalTopo. I may go back to GAIA at some point, but as I settle in to CalTopo that return seems less likely.
