Using a Yeti backwards?

Next Monday we are headed west to visit relatives and on the way home explore the southwest deserts, both low and high. I want to bring my brother-in-law a case of local brew. The ambient temps are going to be below freezing for most of the 3,000 mile trip to California. I'm thinking that the cooler is a good enough insulator to work backwards and keep the brew from freezing, Has anyone else ever attempted to do this and if so, what were your results. The beverages will be in cans. Thanks all for your replies.... BTW,, the Cooler is located in our trailer.

Yes by definition any insulation slows the migration of heat from one space to the other.

Which side is the colder one does not matter.

That said, different foams perform better or worse at different temperature ranges, but in this use case not a concern.

If you’re really worried, throw in a hand warmer packet or two every day, although I doubt you could get beer cold enough to freeze damage it on a road trip. It will thaw. Your main concern is broken cans? Hand warmer and thermometer.

Also just like for keeping things cold, mass is your friend. If you fill the empty space with water bottles it'll take longer to cool inside, too. Why you'd leave any empty space not filled with beer is beyond me, though.

Yep, you'll be fine. Like others have said, add some additional items (packing blanket, etc..) for mass and stop the valuable cargo from bouncing around and it'll be ok. Heck, our Yeti is great. On a 16 day return trip from OE East we stopped at a Louisiana Catfish farm and bought 30 lbs of frozen catfish. I put it all in the Yeti....well, the chemical reaction between the nitrogen frozen fish and the ice and beer and the efficiency of the Yeti resulted in super freezing the contents of the cooler and turned everything into a solid block of ice for the rest of the trip (4days). Not sure if any other cooler could have done that... had to buy new/unfrozen beer....cheers!

Only on ExPo will you find a thread asking about how to keep beer warm.....
Well, I reckon that would be something of a North American-centric view. I bet the question of keeping your beer cellar temp would come up periodically on a forum in the UK or on one in various other former Colonies.

Keeping your beer thawed out is pretty damn important. From hunting camp to ski trips, we fight the cold to keep beer drinkable. It helps to increase the alcohol content, light beer freezes faster. Don’t buy bottles.

it's not just getting rid of the air

warmish thermal **mass** like water in there with the beer will help

light stuff like blankets will be insignificant impacr

Water will prevent freezing. I do this every year. Last week was nine days we temps from 5 to 22 f. Not a single beer froze. I was using a lifetime cooler (yeti knockoff).

Beer gets hauled around in uninsulated trailers to the distribution centers with 1 to 2 night layovers all the time without freezing. The thermal mass of 45K lbs of beer is a different thing of course but still they are in complete uninsulated trailers. In a cooler being agitated for most of the day it is very difficult to freeze beer.

People have been doing this for years, works great for transporting a hot smoked turkey across the state as well. To add an even larger safety margin, adding a Nalgene or other bottle filled with warm water would go a long ways. I know that when we need to chill multiple bottles of sparkling drink that don't even contain alcohol we set them out on the patio in the snow for several days, never had one crack or leak due to freezing pressure until it was in the teens.

Just put it in ice. Thats how roach coaches do it to prevent soft drinks freezing. Add fresh ice when it's gone and you will keep it above freezing

Having read all of this stuff about mass, I'm thinking it will be very important to not skimp and get as many 12 packs as I can stuff in there. Always room for more Yeungling.
