I always hear people upset because they missed the find on utility boxes. I did a search and found this one Could be a cool platform to build from.

As long as it isn't smashed in on the right side, that is a great price, about 1/2 of comparable ones that I've seen on CL in my area.

My local pick a part sells them for $225, but they are always long beds. Not to mention the steel ones are HEAVY. I saw a small fiberglass one for sale when I was out of town for work and would have bought it if it wasn't over 2,000 miles from my house.

I treasure my fiberglass shortie. I think you could take this metal one and strip down quite a bit of the load. First to go would be the rear bumper.

Just an FYI... a neighbor that owns a plumbing service has had one for sale in his front yard for a year now came off one of his service trucks... asking $500 but I bet he'd deal? Let me know if you are interested... located in central TX.

Why aren't folks using aluminum or Stainless Steel tool boxes and stacking them such that they end up with the height and size exactly as they want?

I like the idea of one of these, but personally, I'm going to hold out for an aluminum or fiberglass one due to weight concerns.
The steel models are really heavy... I think someone weighed theirs at around 3000 lbs empty!

Because they are so costly. You can have 2K+ in them easy and only have 6 boxes. from there you still have to purchase material for a floor, tailgate, and front "wall". I've designed several this way in google sketchup cost has been what held me back.
