UZJ100 out-of-box suspension...

...is lacking. Just took our stock 100 series for its first Colorado road trip from PHX, up through the San Juans & San Luis Valley, back through Western Slope and Moab. Lot of road, little off-road, and some good sand dune miles.

Packed down lightly (for us) the 100 drove like a 70s vintage Cadillac; it bounced and swayed like a fat drunken sailor, and the rear dragged like a cheap domestic pick-up lift. It's stock suspension is clearly lacking in load and serious driver capability. I drove my 80, and an FJ60 for many years with stock suspension, but the 100 is the worst. Toyota must have put in the soft North American panzy-style suspension for us in the States :littlefriend:.

In fact, I can not put my body under the 100 stock-form as it sits so low. Not normally an issue but I suspect that Oz- or SA-spec 100s are situated higher.

The Hundy (100) is not (yet) going to be the trek-mobile, but even for the long highway road trip I very much felt like the suspension was inadequate and needing upgrades :Wow1:. $ not immediately permitting, but I am looking forward to an OME upgrade for load carrying alone.

On another note, I have to say the 2UZ-FE engine is outstanding on the highway, and despite my love for inline-sixes I must admit I found the 2UZ-FE not the best trail engine (meaning not to offend anyone either). The V8 was easily bogged down in the same sand that my other Cruiser engines would have thought nothing-of. It's shift points were not what I expected though my 100 shares the same tranny as my 80. Maybe I just need some more experience off-road with a V-configured engine.

Just thought I'd pass my experience with our 100. l8r,

Scott,

The stock suspension does suck. The LX470 does not suffer as badly with the AHC suspension being able to adjust more easily to loads. There is no question the spring rates are designed for trips to the mall.

One of the best things I did was replace the soft stock springs with OME medium. Big improvement but the truck still suffers from crappy shocks. There are currently no decent bolt in shocks available for the 100. The good news is you can purchase the complete suspension (including the diff drop) for less than $800.

Figure out where the power is made and keep the rpms in the range. I could use a regear and I'm only running 33's. With the 4spd transmission, 2nd gear is too high when you have larger tires and the truck likes to fall out of the power band. I'm used to manual transmissions so I still like to select the gear myself when I'm off road.

I thought the LTR's were available for the 100?

AtomicDog had a set installed on her 80, and they were awesome. No fade and great pitch control.

I know some have used them overseas. Slee is supposedly working on a Bilstein option which would be acceptable. I have several solutions already in mind but no money to work it out right now.

Have you looked into correcting the speedo gear?

My 80 did the same thing, but when i replaced the electronic speedo gear thingamajiggy (for 33" tires) it changed the shift points to back to stock and the 80 feels perfect again! VERY big difference with the new gear installed!

Worth looking into, tks.

I would have to agree that the stock suspension is rather lacking. I always felt like taking dramamine before a long haul. I started with the OME 2-1/2" and OME shocks. The ride really improved. But with the amount of gear I end up hauling around (Bumper, drawers, fridge, rack, rooftent, etc.) I was constantly blinding oncoming vehicles with my headlights. I swapped out the rear springs to the heavy 80 series springs and voila! It'll run out at 90+ fully loaded and handles great. I'd recommend this set up to anyone carrying the world around with them full time.

Paul,

Are you using the 863 springs? I'll probably try those when I get rid of these 865's (medium).

Actually, I believe they are the 866 progressive springs. They are the progressinve heavy duty set. I figure I have added almost 300 lbs to the rear of the truck in goodies. I still handles better that stock with nothing in it.

I remember the stock suspension being super cush. It wasn't my style. My '97 LX450 was 10x worse. That thing kept swishing side to side 24/7 which I heard was normal on the LX version.

I was TRIPLE POW POW EXCITED when I added the OME 2" back in 2001. With 865 springs the ride was CUSH but weight sagged the rear. 866 will take care of sag. 863 will also cure the sag AND allow for 3" lift height even with a Slee Bumper.

863s are in the garage. tbars, shocks, and diff drop are not :( Eventually she'll run 864s but not for a while. Just need the wee one to grow up a little bit so we're not crawling up to put him in the car seat and the Hundy will change looks a little :)
