Hey folks,
I'm in a Land Cruiser 200 (LX variant) at the moment, and looking to upgrade to a full size truck in the next year for the sake of extra storage (given current wait times, can you blame me for planning ahead!), improved MPG (diesel or hybrid), and the ability to hang out inside my camper during inclement weather. I'll most likely end up with a Ram 1500 or Tundra (waiting to see what the next gen looks like) with a crew cab and 5.5' bed. I was previously looking at the Alucab Canopy camper, especially since there's a rumor they're going to begin making shells for full size rigs. However, after seeing the massive amount of standing room within the AT Atlas, I really like the fact that myt 6yo could hang out up top, while I'm doing meal prep or whatever task below. The main issue I have with the AT is their shells are all designed around mid-sized trucks, like the Tacoma. The mattress (48" wide) and roof area are the same size for a full size truck as they are for a mid size, which also means the lateral angles of the shell are are substantially decrased, thereby decreasing the cargo volume in the shell. It may not seem like a huge deal, but this very same reason is why ExPo declared the Vagabond Nomad as the winner for full size rigs but AT for mid-sized-- Wedge Camper Shoot.
I'm curious who has an AT or Vagabond camper fitted to a full size rig here, and what their experiences are. I'm debating if I can make do with the Atlas' decreased lateral angles and smaller mattress, or if a Vagabond Nomad can meet my needs. For example, would there be enough room for my 6yo and wife to hangout "up top" in a Nomad when the extra platform is removed or pushed back for extra standing room? Has anyone made an extra platform for their camper-- it's possilbe than an 18" extension might solve the situation for Nomad. I'm also curious about the dynamics in heavy wind and cold weather for the Atlas pop top for Nomad wedge. I feel like the Atlas would hold up better in both situations.
While other options like the Project M and OVRLND look interesting, I'd prefer the smaller footprint of the AT or Vagabond. Not sure the Project M or OVRLND would make it through the squeeze at Elephant Hill!
