Valve adjustment on fzj80?

If I don't roll the throttle on very easily I get a little valve chatter, almost like detonation. Runs super smooth otherwise. Think I have a vacuum leak or two I'll chase down this weekend but wanted to see what you folks thought. Gas is regular unleaded. Have had this sound for a couple tankfuls.

You mean pinking ?
a UK term -not sure what it is in american !

usually happens under load- when either the timing is off - or the wrong fuel is being used.

On my Nissan patrol I never worked out what caused it in over two years, had Nissan check it with their system and they just said bad fuel

Unfortunately these heavy ladies have expensive taste and like the premium flavor...
I have 230k on mine and mine pings under minor load. Probably excess carbon build up, which over time I heard will cause the need for a timing adjustment?? Not 100% sure about that... But I threw a P0401 code a while back and it got worse... replaced the VSV and it got better, but I still hear a little of the pinging and it annoys the CR@P out of me...

Solved

Well, I can't believe it, but it was in fact the gas. I added some octane booster to 1/2 a tank then topped off with premium right away. Five miles later, ping is gone. And I thought these Cruisers could run on strong coffee...

I do not see why a properly tuned up 1fz can not run on 87 oct gas. I run mine on that or the cheap 85 oct in the US with out issue. I have my timing advanced to 7deg as well and still do not get ping. The one time I had ping was when my rad got plugged and the engine hit 225f then I would get a slight amount of ping at tip in throttle.

This engine was made to run on almost any gas and there is no way a non turbo or S/C one should need anything but regular.

Did you do a full tune up on the truck when you got it?

Yeah, definitely should NOT ping with 87 oct. I've never had a pinging issue in mine and I've always run 87 oct. I'll x2 that your radiator is probably getting old and inefficient. Adding octane boost is a band-aid fix for something more serious.

I think that the gas station was getting crap gas. Second tank of regular with no additive and all is well. Radiator is new and temps stay just below the 1/2 mark regardless of load or speed. Good notion, however!

If you have not modded your temperature gauge, it will never read higher than that until you have practically toasted the engine....

3 bucks worth of parts and a good hour of work will get you a functioning temp gauge...

Would love more info on the temp gauge mod!!! The mud thread I found says three hours of time and .80 cents of parts. Do you have another method???

By the time you pay for shipping it is about three bucks. I have done 4 of them so far, so I can do it in under an hour, but working quickly, a complete newb could get it done in under 3 hours.....

Another option (but much more expensive) is a plug-and-play on-board gauge (like the Scangauge or Ultra-Gauge) that taps into the ODB port (you have a '97, so no issues there). Gives you real-time data, and also is a code reader if you ever throw a CEL code.

I think the Scan Gauge II is less expensive and far less hassle than a dedicated Temp unit. Found it on amazon for $149.00 Should be here Friday! :sombrero:

Really? We'll kick myself in the ***! I'll try it.. What about high mileage? Also what about high outside temps? Mine starts to pinging when its warm outside.... I guess I need to search for more info on MUD... Thanks for the heads up!

I love mine! One of my favorite additions to date. Way better piece of mind than the "un-modded" stock temp gauge.
