Valve seal replacement

So my Monty has been smoking at idle for a while now and has been getting worse. I decided to go ahead and replace my valve seals. I did all of the intake seals and have had just about had it with this job. I'm considering leaving the exhaust seals alone. Is this a bad idea and if so why?

I just tackled the exact same job. I did the whole job, valve seals on the intake and exhaust side, cam seals, front and rear, timing belt and everything involving that job. I just thing if you don't you're just going to end up taking everything apart sooner to do what you didn't do the first time around

I just finished mine as well. In my case the exhaust valve seals were definitely in worse shape than the intakes so yea, I'd do them all. The hardest ones to get to are the driver's side exhausts (as I'm sure you're aware by now). I was using one of the "push to release" style valve spring compressors and the way I got the driver's side bank done was actually holding the tool on each of the valve spring assemblies while having a helper use a pry bar to push down on the top of the tool. There's just no room to swing a hammer or get leverage otherwise on that side of the head.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will take the time to do the exhaust seals also. I just wasn't sure it mattered since the oil burning is usually caused by oil getting sucked into the intake valves.

How much do you guys reckon a shop would charge for this job? I've done every repair on the montero myself, but this is one job I would rather not do.

Valve stem seal replacement

Anyone in the Dallas Fort Worth, Tx area have experience working on these? I need to find someone that knows how to replace these.

The job isn't hard as much as it is time consuming, and frustrating at times. I would suggest having a few extra keepers on hand. They are cheap. Is also a good time to replace hydraulic lash adjusters.

check out this video I made when I did my seals almost 3 years back.

Ok so I ended up doing all of the valves. The exaust were actually easier to do than the intake. I used shop air to hold the valves in place when removing the springs. I had a few retainer clips that would not release so that made the job take longer.

I also screwed up and put everything back together. Started it up and heard a nasty tick tick tick. Thought it was the valve lash adjusters needing to be bleed. Turns out one fell out and was sitting on the head under the rocker cover.

All is good now and no more plumes of smoke when I take off at a light anymore.

Good job man, how long did the job take?

Took a lot longer than it should have. I had a loaner car so I wasn't rushing. I got it done over a week . I would say it took close to 10 hours including my screw ups . The hardest part is getting the old seals off. I used regular pliers so I'm not sure if valve seal pliers would have made it any easier.
