Graton, we are not set on a time of year to visit yet, was initially thinking for a March-early spring time frame but if its best to push off later in the year, that is fine too. Thanks for the thoughts on the LA-SF portion of the route. The only must do part of that portion would be Big Sur, which we could easily make a detour from SF south first, and then head north.
Appreciate the comments from you too Oldcarnut. Seems like September-October-November is kind of the sweet spot, would be more of a wait next year until we could enjoy this trip....

Sept,Oct,Nov and Mid April, May early June are our shoulder months when coastal fog is minimal and storms off the Pacific are less likely ie those are the nicest times to hit the coast. That and tourists are minimal. July - August fog season and tourist season.
