There are plenty of free ways to send text messages to international travelers. WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, Apple iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and similar apps allow you to send messages from your smart phone over the Internet to folks in other countries. The problem is that the folks on the receiving end have to be using a similar program.
Now Verizon is offering a plan that allows subscribers in USA to send SMS text messages to any smart phone around the world. The fee is $5 a month. Verizon calls the plan World Messaging Unlimited. SMS is worldwide standard, and a feature of every smart phone, independent of operating system.
"With the new promotion, customers pay a $5 monthly access fee per line for an unlimited allowance for messages sent from the U.S. to countries around the world.
In addition, consumers also receive a discounted rate of 1 cent per minute for calls made from the U.S. to landline and wireless phones in Mexico and Canada; and 5 cents per minute on calls made from the U.S. to landlines and wireless phones in most Caribbean and Central American countries."
Included in the 5 cents per minute voice plan are Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and more than 20 Caribbean islands.
Note that the World Messaging Unlimited plan is for Verizon customers who are within the borders of USA. Verizon customers who travel outside USA, or who live in another country, will be charged a different rate for messaging sent to USA.
