I did catch that MPG comment. But even without a trailer the Bug was economical for the day, but not by today's standards.

Its a great idea except for that gutter mounted hitch.:Wow1:

Now if it could be built onto a 4runner or other pick up with a heavier type mounting for the hitch,you would really have something.
You would have all that useable space in the rear of the pick up:sombrero:

I found this rig in the basement of a car museum in Auburn Indiana (there are about 5 museums in town) The cars are for the most part all original.

Thought this camper looked pretty interesting. Picture of inside was through dirty glass (I was already across the barricade to keep out). Thanks to iPhoto to get most of the camper out of the shadow. Little flash on camera wasn't up to task.
