I own a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero limited.
When I hit 70 on the highway in 2wd I felt a vibration and the check engine light came on. It works fine at slower speeds or if I gradually reach 70. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be.

Check each wheels lug nuts to make sure they are tight. After doing that while tire pressure is in air on the jack wiggle and check for play in wheel bearings. Then also check ABS traction control sensor on each wheel that they are clean. (Easy to do by unbolting them from their mount and wiping off, as they can get dirty with metal shavings/ dirt) other than that not sure what else.

I'm afraid it may be in the transmission. What are the chances of there being a problem there?

Unbalanced tire/s, bad u joint, a handful of other things may be, transmission seems to be fine if it gets to 70 without any issues. Start small with what Monstero said then try what I told you. Report back when you fix the problem.

If the check engine light came on, then there should be a fault code logged. Drive to your nearest Autozone/Pep Boys/etc and ask them to scan the car and find the code.
