VW have been offering a "offroad" version of the T4 and T5 all the time. I really can`t see much difference between those and the Rockton apart from a bit more options when i comes to the interior.

The old offroad models got lifted suspension by 30 mm, 16 inch steel wheels, lower gear ratios and protective plates just like the Rockton.

I am not quite sure about that. There was no way on earth you could order a lifted T4 with protection plates and gear reduction straight from the dealer... The best you could hope is to have it shipped from the dealer to SEIKEL to have all those mods done. The T4 Panamericana version was exactly that... a stock T4 Syncro modded by SEIKEL.

Until this year you had to do the very same thing with the T5... Now you can skip some of the hassle of modding your van because SEIKEL and VW work in an even closer relationship.

If I were in the market of a lifted T5 I would try to get a cheap stock one and make all the mods myself. The only thing you may need to pay for is for having the gearbox touched up since you need special gears not available in the paralell market. Protection plates and spacers for the springs can be made for a lot less money. Maybe not as pretty as SEIKEL Plates but just as strong. And I know because I made an engine protection plate for a friends T5.

Yes they were rebuilt by Seikel, but came as an option from the dealer. At least here in Norway that is.....

Norwegian dealers won`t be offering the rockton. Simply because of th price, price including taxes for a 5 seater with the 180 bhp engine would be close to 900000 Norwgian kroner. Well above 100000 usd......

If you want to know a tad more about the Rockton and what can you do to get something just like it but doing it yourself... go have a look in www.furgovw.org and then into the Syncro subforum. We have been chatting about it for a long time now. German forums may even have somewhat more updated info.

VW Transporter Rockton 4MOTION Expedition looks interesting

Haldex AWD with locking rear differential
2.0L turbodiesel
6 speed manual transmission
16 inch all-terrain tires
reinforced steel wheels
ride height increased by 30 mm / 1.2 in
an upgraded transmission, more suitable for off-road operation according to VW
skid plates for fuel tank, transmission, rear axle and exhaust system
rock rails

It's too bad that VW USA decided to sell vans made by Chrysler, instead of figuring out how to import the Transporter models. The continuing success of the Sprinter may change VW's mind on this subject.

Incidentally, VW offers a van model called the Rockton, and a small crossover called the Rocktan. The Rocktan is a re-badged Suzuki.

I thought I had seen a simillar Transporter on Portal axles. Can't seem to find the link now though.

This one the thread's based on seems to fall a little short of the original Syncro Vans with the locker and low gearing... Bummer, could be a neat rig.

I was a bit confused by this at first by the Rockton/Rocktan thing.

The Rocktan is still a concept at this point. Assuming it does get launched, the Rocktan will be based on the Suzuki SX4.

Regardless, I think the Rockton is a pretty cool vehicle. When I saw the story on Autoblog, I immediately thought of this forum!
