Volkswagen Westy Syncro 4x4. 224,500 miles $36,000
  • This is a solid camper. Drives very well. 4x4 works great. Paint is glossy. It looks great from 10 feet but is not a garage queen. It has some of the typical Vanagon seam rust (but minor) that has been repaired. Utility inlet metal has been repaired. Rock chips on front valence, etc. Has the typical Vanagon sliding door dent. I bought this in 2007 and have been all over the Western US and Canada in it. I would drive it anywhere without worry. $36,000. This is priced at the lower end of the Syncro Westy market. You could buy this, drive it a few years, then likely sell it for more than you paid for it. Will deliver anywhere in lower 48 or Canada for a plane ticket back. I' m not eager to sell, but marital bliss might level up if I do.
Powertrain
  • Subraru 2.5l purchased from Mastercraft/Hatfield in Santa Barbara. Installed in 2008 and has about motor has 90k miles now, with 30k by me. Headgaskets replaced preemptively at install. Top quality swap parts used: SmallCar, Burley Motorsports, Mastercraft, Tom Shiels. Everything important replaced at install: radiator, stainless coolant lines, all rubber bits, clutch, and slave cylinder, stainless exhaust
  • Transaxle rebuilt about 60k miles ago. 025 Motorsports 711 shifter. Viscous coupler is working fine.
  • Front differential rebuilt about 20k miles ago
  • New driveshaft about 20k
  • Rear locking differential and decoupler. (Decoupler allows shift from 4WD to RWD on the fly)
  • AC is not installed but a working compressor, condenser, and all lines are included.
Brakes/suspension/body
  • Brakes updated to larger front rotors and calipers (Audi S6)
  • Rear brakes converted to disc with GoWesty kit. Uses VW/Audi calipers and rotors Brakes work fantastic!

Forgot to mention that I have insulated covers for all windows and pop-top. Winter camping is toasty with those and the Propex propane heater. If you don't know the Propex, all combustion occurs outside the vehicle so there is no condensation and they are perfectly safe. Aftermarket defroster for wiper parking area is installed - I used to ski a lot all over the Rockies.
