VW Vanagon T3 timing belt change

This weekend i helped a bit with changing the timing belt on a VW Vanagon T3 1986 diesel engine. Belt replacement itself is pretty simple - getting access to the belt is whole different story. In this case a bit of welding was required to release hex - allen bolts on the crankshaft pulley. Here are the details:

For those thinking about DIY timing belt replacement, consider renewing the waterpump too. Just an extra hour of work and the cost of a new waterpump, but saves quite a bit of work in case the waterpump goes 20 - 40K onwards.

The VW Vanagon is known as the VW transporter in Europe. Quite a popular vehicle because in some European countries it can be driven road tax free 25 years and older.

I bet it was a little hard to get to the belt. I am starting a rebuild on a 1.6TD for a conversion I am doing on my 86 Syncro. It looks like it will be hard to get to anything on the front of the motor once I get it put in.
