There is a write up .... somewhere on this camper van. He delves into the merits of a lifted 2WD Ford van.... he built an excellent unit which cruised Baja often. It sold on Expo about a year ago.

I'll have to check it out.

Goal for the next build is to have something comfortable with a minimal interior build, room for two massive dog crates and our gear. We'd like something we can wheel pretty aggressively, both at low speeds and faster, thus the minimal build (probably a welded frame for the dog crates, gear and the fridge, a diesel heater, 200W of solar and some water).

With that criteria, we'll probably end up with a short wheelbase van with solid axles. Twin locked- probably Harrup (bad experiences with the ARB lines failing in the middle of an obstacle), front bumper with a winch and likely sit on 35s. Eventually bypasses front and rear. Maybe a rear bumper if I crunch the stock on rocks. Should be able to manage most 4x4 trails and some light rock crawling without being too heavy, and while having the space for us. My biggest concern is height on a lot of the trails we run most often. The Tacoma was supposed to be a nice compromise between our crawler and weekend camping but ended up not being big enough/having enough payload after some armor and sacrificing too much off-road as it was built.

Just a question, why coil sprung rather than leafs?

A few advantages off-road- typically you can get a better turning radius versus leafs in the front, and coils tend to have significantly better articulation for the money. Also, on the front end leaf spring hangers can get caught on things when you're approaching an obstacle.

I'd like to stay around 30, but would go higher for the right vehicle.
Gotcha. I think you'll be able to find something for that price. I'm asking for a little bit more because of the low miles/mechanic bills.

Mine checked most of your boxes and then some. Why didn’t you check the classified here? It was even on the featured classified. I sold it last week.

Relax, I have been watching the classifieds here pretty closely. I did see yours, it was a nice van!

Like I said, I'm looking for a shorter wheelbase- as much as I liked yours it was the extended so I didn't pursue it.

Another, not an EB…within price range?

it is. We’re debating on doubling the price range and opting for something newer. Hard to justify 30k for a rig with 20 years of hard use.

thats been my exact thought process/ rational... I started with the used search, and anything that caught my eye was 50k or more.

Ive liked this thread though! It's been good to see the ads "curated" in a thread like this.
