Water storage solution for family trip?

Crossfaced

Observer
We're going on a month, maybe 2 month long trip this summer. We're a family of four in a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Space is definitely a concern. I have been thinking of a way to carry drinking water. We really don't want to have to carry bottled water.

My solution....maybe, is to get a length of 6" schedule 40 PVC and put it on the roof of my jeep. At 9' it will have a capacity of about 13 gallons. Probably just go with a 6' shot. Through various fittings I will be able to filter the water going in and out.

Obviously keeping the water clean and fresh is of utmost importance and I plan to do research on ways to keep it clean but does this sound like a viable idea?

Thanks

Got anything against these? They are not perfect but they are secure.

Depending on if you have a roof rack, they can be strapped down up there which holds with your intention of roof carry.

I'd get at least one half size one for frequent use, or use some other smaller container for having some water accessible while moving. You can refill it at the end of the day when you have time to fool with pulling the larger one down.

Water is really heavy. 13gal of water weighs over 100lbs. All in one unit it's going to be more difficult to securely mount. Also if you bust it against a tree limb, ALL your water is gone.

I'm not sure PVC is correct for potable water storage. Especially while baking in the sun. Maybe some stainless tubing instead? Would probably be lighter too. Keep it insulated or shaded in some way to avoid drinking hot water.

If you use black PVC on a roof rack you could have a warm shower/rinse down with the right fittings.

There is the Rubican or Waterpax and use the MORryde fender mounts, or mount to a rear table. I can run with 4.5 gallons at a time, but its just me and the dog. For you, you could run larger waterpax or the 5g cans posted above on the fenders if you dont need to run extra fuel.

For a solar shower the Rhino Rack Back Bone could be used as the base, with either the platform or Vortex Bars.

I mounted the tank to the roof rack using the water tank mounting tray. I used Carriage bolts and plates under the roof rack.
