Water, water, everywhere...

How much water are Socal peeps carrying? We're a family of 5.

Trying to decide if my .gov Scepters will work, and if so, how to carry them.

I might end up rocking a frontrunner rack, but thats a lot of freakin' weight up high.

(Also, i'm aware of frontrunner's tanks. Lemme know if you rock one of those and how it's working. Rig in question is a 2001 trooper)

I'm not in SoCal, but last trip in the desert, I carried 14 gallons plus a case of water bottles for my family of 4. I was leery of carrying them in my Yakima Megawarrior rack, so put them inside. It wasn't too hot, so ended up having some left over after 4 days. This summer, I am hoping to install a Gamiviti rack and strapping them down up top. Or may still carry them inside. Interested to see what you come up with. I'll also need heavier duty springs out back, as it was squatting like crazy with all the cargo + water.

Brian, I just received my valterra 12 gallon tank for my van rebuild. (Family of three)

I based that as a compromise for weight vs wanting to have a reserve, and our typical usage when I was carrying 7 gallon Reliant containers. Usually 1 got us through a normal weekend, and I always carried two to the desert, which turned out to be a good idea when I snapped the spout off the cap of one container at the Desert Rendezvous 2012.

I will still carry a second supply (either Reliant or bottles) in remote areas, but now the main bulk of my water will be mounted low and more centrally. The other driver for going to a mounted tank was to have a pump/faucet.

Edit: doing the math, that's between 12 and 19 gallons, depending on destination...

General rule if thumb is 100 ounces per adult per day to survive. If you are doing strenuous activity or it is very hot this number could easily double.

I just carry one gallon per person per day plus wash and shower water.

its always better to carry weight low and center. I carry 2.5 gal per person per day at a min, for cooking, cleaning, drinking.
