My experience with the North Face duffles wouldn't warrant recommending them to anybody. Bottom is not water proof, zipper doesn't keep rain out.
I bought one with the idea of keeping my camera bag and equipment in it to keep dry. The bag was always up off the ground, and the zipper was closed but yet, I still had a very wet camera. It was out directly in the elements the entire time, on a pontoon raft (no rapids or white water, no splashes over the side). We had a lot of rain one day, luckily we were stationary the next so I could leave everything open to dry inside the tent the next day.
Maybe with the zipper side facing the right direction and in a less extreme environment (i.e. not the middle of Alaska), it will do well. It seems to be a very robust and hardy bag, just don't rely on it to keep water out in extreme conditions
