weight comparison: do these numbers make sense?

Springs are flat but not on the overload springs yet. You’re fine up to 800lbs more payload (formula is a simple 5,600lb GVWR - 4,800lb weight = 800lbs). But if you’re carrying weight on a regular basis, think about adding a leaf or getting a custom set.

And remember Tacoma’s are not work trucks. They are lifestyle trucks. Meant to carry canoes, camping gear, etc. So the springs are catered more towards that than HD work duties. Results in better ride. This is what America wanted, so Toyota dropped the Hilux in US and created the Tacoma.
It also results in better offroad performance (unladen)....lots of guys want a Hilux with big payload #, but would hate it offroad....

good moring
this was an issue on the 2nd gen tacomas and a bulletion went out from toyota so if you went to the dealership and complained they
would do an upgrade to heavier duty springs. ....

i had this TSB done on my 2011; no cap sat Way high and bounced!

In general all Toyotas sold in the US in the last 30 years have soft springs IMO. That's why I went with aftermarket options on 2 4runners, 4 Tacomas, 2 Tundras, and a Land Cruiser. Even the "fix" on the second gens was a joke. On the bright side you have 800lbs of payload left!

all of this feedback is helping me put perspective on where the truck will be going with my "home improvements" under the cap; thanks. helper springs & sumoblocks in september, too

flat springs common. doesn't mean toast. mine are almost flat with just topper on. the hauling capacity of these trucks is not much. remember its a 1/4ton truck lol not half ton...
all the stuff you added to bed and truck in general is weight whether you want it to be or not.. down to how many pens you have in the center console...

HAH; i love you so much i hate you! yesterday afternoon i started going through the glove compartment & center console taking stuff out. i mean spare disposable gloves, individual wet wipes, and "Yes", duplicate sharpie markers & pens. today we're going through the toolbag in the back box. gotta shave some weight in anticipation of those 2 sheets of pink foam going into the cap!

Correct. I wasn’t saying it was a bad move. I do wish they would’ve upped the payload a bit more though. My old Taco’s were under 1k lbs. Pathetic.

Am I the only guy wondering about the tire "sticker"
Do not exceed 1150#

Which would be 2300# on the front axle, 2300# on the rear axle.

don't forget the rear seat headrests! good for at least 2lbs lol and bonus you get better rear visibility!

those, and the seat part of the jump seats as well as the black beard bib apron thingie were gone on day #2. my cap pretty much renders my interior mirror useless, so that might be the next thing to go, as well as the seatbelt shoulderharness for the non-existent backseats.

oddly enough, there's a door jamb sticker indicating my GVW has been reduce x 10#. i can only think this is from the floormats????

but i'mma gettin' those helper springs & upgraded bumpstops in september for sure.

Don’t forget to cut the handle down on your tooth brush?. Old racing sailor joke. Yeah racing sailboats we strip them clean everything thing counts regarding weight. The good boat crews never bring anything onboard beyond what they are wearing for day races, meaning no gear bag etc. LOL

Don’t look at the new Ford Maverick payload numbers. It might piss you off lol. Toyota has tried to extend the Taco model life by going softer and softer on the suspension vs actually do a new design that gets it back into the competitive zone regarding pavement ride capability and handling. Unfortunately payload suffers when they take that approach. Its a US buyer thing granted CA is the biggest auto market in the US but probably not the biggest mid sized truck market in the US.
