Why running boards instead of sliders that look like running boards and protect the paint like running boards, but function like sliders? Probably $150 in material, even from your local welding shop, for enough to do a full size truck. 2x6x3/16" rectangle tube on 2x2x1/4" legs, welded to the frame. Mine maybe took me 3 evenings to do, counting the third eveing of mounting them...

Craigslist is also a good spot to find "take-offs" like running boards.
