driving out into the wilderness
Where is this "wilderness "?
driving out into the wilderness
In the Southwest north is found using 1 stick and the sun, its available everywhere and idiot-proof.
How does that work when you need an azimuth?
Never needed a magnet to find north, on the ocean on a cloudy day sure. But on land, near a road, never.
Commonly known as a shadow stick
Why a map? Just go back to your car and drive home. To each their own.
Yet...no way to shoot an azimuth. Makes it very unreliable for accurate navigation.
Well, in the daytime, but at night, you might need a bigger fire, especially if down in a valley!... We all need to remind ourselves leaving your vehicle is not the best first choice in a survival situation. The smoke from your vehicle burning can be seen for miles. ?

So, if I understand you correctly, big fire if someone needs help in the night, but if not, save a couple of tires for the smoke you mentioned in the day?Yes the ones that do survive wait till its light.
