What did you finish your drawer system/sleeping platform with?

I'm about halfway through my drawer system build that will fold out to a sleeping platform as well. It's taking some time but going along well.

I've built a steel frame with wood drawers. The sides of the frame will be wrapped with aluminum sheet riveted or screwed into place.

I'm still undecided what to finish the top of the platform with. Home cheapo carpet? Just stain it and lots of poly urethane? Bed liner? Something else?

Staining would look awesome but prone to scratching and not very slide resistant.

Carpet would be nice and quiet and add a little squish to the sleeping surface. Not to mention hide any imperfections in my carpentry. It would trap dirt, dog hair, and whatever else is thrown on it.

Bed liner would be durable and slip resistant but very rough if having to kneel around on it.

Also the fact that I have a tan interior leads me towards either staining or carpet from a aesthetics standpoint

So what a you all using and why?

I would use commercial carpet with a tight nap, closed loop, it's easier to clean. Don't use that felt indoor outdoor stuff IMO. The other thing is the pad, that carpet usually comes with a rubber back, try and get the jute backing and use the best pad you can find. If you put pad under rubber it will flake apart over time. I'm planning on doing a platform in my truck and I have to think about my old knees crawling around in there, like during a long storm, you'll be in there for hours.

:sombrero: I found some tight/color (close)-indoor/outdoor carpet at Lowes and using 3m adhesive on prepainted plywood-

Plus-with all the hinges/anchors bolted thru the plywood-it ain't going anywhere-

I think I'm going to go the carpet route. Just sucks having a tan interior. Finding a color that will go well as match is gonna be tough

Jimbo - I have the same concern about accessing recovery equipment when needed (maybe you tailgate is right up against a tree.) Im going to do hatches on top as well as drawers .... Best of both world

Google marine carpet. That's what I'm going to use, plus you can find it online in various colors. Would love to see some pics of what you have so far and the finished product.

I recommend Line-x - looks fantastic, easy to clean and durable. Look at my post in the drawers thread for an example.

Ill post a thread when done... Pics are all over and in a tight garage so not the best angles.

The frame is done and slides welded on. I didn't want to weld them but I would have had to use a lot more tubing to get the mounting points in line with something strong... To be honest the frame is very light... It's the damn sliders that are super heavy.... Easily 3-4 tomes more than the frame itself!

Like I said - space in my garage is at a premium. The race car will suffice as a table for now lol

Monstaliner is available in many different colors and you can finish it smooth or more textured depending on how late in the process you do the final rolling.

:sombrero: YUP and I used the old standby(cardboard) for templet/fitment and shaped/supported for quick removal, when I'm called to carry some people in the back seats-
