What do you store OUTSIDE of your vehicle?

You know that AmTrak just dumps theirs under the cars while speeding thru remote areas (read as just outside towns) automatically . No ammo can required.

Of course, the waste dumped from trains falls out at 60 mph onto the RR bed which is a thick bed of rocks... the defecation/per mile are probably pretty low and scattered thinly so they soak in or dry on the rock. Not to mention that Amtrak doesn't particularly want people walking on the tracks anyhow :-/

For our purpose, especially trail rides where a lot of people pass through, it's probably better to pack it out. Even burying it becomes complicated and messy when you are considering a place where there might be up to a thousand people per year passing through and they tend to all stop in the same places to camp, thus concentrating the problem and making a mess... and that's assuming everyone is responsible and tries to manage it properly such as 200 ft from water sources and campsites, buried 8 inches ft deep, etc. Less responsible people create nasty minefields.

Personally, I try to not carry anything on the outside of the vehicle, except something like a canoe/paddles/etc. I'm too concerned about small items being stolen or falling off. With that said, I would like to build a highlift mount and perhaps shovel/axe mounts on the roof rack or a rear tire rack that lock solidly.

I use it for firewood mostly, occasionally misc recovery gear. Depending on how your exhaust exits, be careful about what you put there. On my Cherokee, the exhaust exited on each side of the tow hitch. On a cross country trip w/a hitch rack, I ended up melting holes in two action packers and melted down some stuff in the bins.

If you put food back there and your exhaust exits near there, it might smell :)

Originally the exhaust exited to just behind the pass. tire, but I had a muffler replaced a whil back and the shop was lazy and didn't put in that one extra bend and just shot it straight out the back.

I already have a full-width rack that is 2 feet deep, I put an action packer on there and headed across country. I stopped at a truck stop somewhere in around Manitoba and saw that the bottom corner was melted a bit. I was lucky nothing inside was damaged. I shuffled things around and all was good - still have the sligtly melted action packer to this day! :D

Last year I used the rack with my Durango, and it's exhaust exits straight back as well. I bolted a chunk of 2x4 with a piece of plywood to act as a heat shield = pretty ghetto but it worked fine. I had cheapy camp chairs on the other side of the plywood and they were fine.

Back to the little rack I want to make...

The ammo can, shovel and axe I like!
I'll try to incorporate those ideas into this thing.
I was thinking I might like to make it fold down on a hinge to be able to access the hatch without having to remove it from the receiver.

Everything in the back of my truck is locked, except the small fire extinguisher.....that's why I keep the high-dollar extinguishers mounted inside the cab.
