I use it for firewood mostly, occasionally misc recovery gear. Depending on how your exhaust exits, be careful about what you put there. On my Cherokee, the exhaust exited on each side of the tow hitch. On a cross country trip w/a hitch rack, I ended up melting holes in two action packers and melted down some stuff in the bins.
If you put food back there and your exhaust exits near there, it might smell
Originally the exhaust exited to just behind the pass. tire, but I had a muffler replaced a whil back and the shop was lazy and didn't put in that one extra bend and just shot it straight out the back.
I already have a full-width rack that is 2 feet deep, I put an action packer on there and headed across country. I stopped at a truck stop somewhere in around Manitoba and saw that the bottom corner was melted a bit. I was lucky nothing inside was damaged. I shuffled things around and all was good - still have the sligtly melted action packer to this day!
Last year I used the rack with my Durango, and it's exhaust exits straight back as well. I bolted a chunk of 2x4 with a piece of plywood to act as a heat shield = pretty ghetto but it worked fine. I had cheapy camp chairs on the other side of the plywood and they were fine.
Back to the little rack I want to make...
The ammo can, shovel and axe I like!
I'll try to incorporate those ideas into this thing.
I was thinking I might like to make it fold down on a hinge to be able to access the hatch without having to remove it from the receiver.
