What do you take on a trip?

Hey. New here but planning a bit of touring in my tj and was hoping some people here could help me plan it out. I know tj isnt the best vehicle for touring but its mainly used for shorter trips.
I am thinking of making a camper back for it and need to figure out what needs to be stored and being new to 4wding i havent collected it all yet. Estimated sizes would help a lot to.
Once I've got the design sorted out ill post it up.
Thanks.

Well reading through them but that is some long lists. Im planning to go to the cape for a month which is mostly sandy corrogations and water. Also local tracks are muddy rutted out hills and another close spot is very steep loose rock hills.
Also where i mostly go isnt too remote so dont need major spares but what would you take?
Thanks.

Tell us a little bit more about your TJ so we can tell you what you would want to carry as far as parts and tools. On every trip I carry a "fluid" bag. This includes gear oil, motor oil, transmission (power steering) fluid, RTV sealant, grease and a funnel.

Because I am locked in the front and it is a D30 with heavy MTR's on it I also carry spare inner/outer shafts with U-joints already installed and the stock spider gears. Since I play on the rocks I also carry my stock tie rod even though I upgraded to a heady duty tie rod a while back.

Well its a 1998 manual and it will be running 35s and hopefully front and rear air lockers and maybe chromo axles. Fluids a good idea. I was planning on just a small tool kit with ratchets and spanners etc and build a holder for them. Not really any rock crawling for me. Also the main worry for break downs is actually the 100s of kms of corrugations i have to go over. Past that its relatively easy wheeling with a few river crossings and a little bit of hills etc. On the short trips im not worried about spares because I can just get towed out and fix it at home.
Ill post up my camper design tomorrow.
Thanks.

Are you going to do the CREB and the OTL when you do the Cape, what time of year are you going to go? You can get a basic 2WD vehicle to the Cape depending on the way you go. The CREB can be a killer but only if it's wet, steep, muddy, rutted slippery etc. You can drive it in half a day on good weather or 3 days if it rains. The OTL is pretty much the same, the wrong time of the season and you wont get through, end of the dry season and it's pretty straight forward. Go the easy way and its corrucations and red dirt/sand. This all makes an impact on what you decide to take as spares and tools. I'm off along the CREB and OTL at the end of September, I'll be taking fluids, belts and that kind of stuff, not axles and driveshafts just unis etc. Tools, well what ever I need to replace the spares I take and just a basic tool kit of sockets, spanners, screw drivers and torx bits etc.

My Jeep is a XJ running 35's and a rooftop tent. It's setup to hande the corrugations with remote reservior Bilstein 5150's and drop brackets for the control arms to keep them almost horizontal to the road. I also run the tyres at around 22psi and rive at a speed suitable for the conditions. Muck it up and the Jeep will shake itself apart before you get close. The round trip for me is 8500km with around 3500km on dirt.

Cheers

Well I live in victoria so its a bit of a drive up there. I wont be doing it for another 2 years because ill be in my gap year so this is mostly to get my car ready by then with limited income. I havent really done too much research but ill be going in the dry season at some point and would like to I'd probably do CREB and OTL if its fairly straight forward as you say. Not worried about the car not being capable just not the place to get stuck.
My car should also be running long arms which will help with the bumps a bit. Yer I'm fairly sensible just still new to all this.
Thanks.

Yer so I think thisw thread went a bit the wrong way. I am fine with clothes and toiletries and stuff and theres no flights or business and it is all in the one country so a lot of that does apply. I mean more to do with designing storage systems. Here is my design:

Tyre actually goes on a swing down tyre rack. There is a fridge and a drawer in the bottom though and a compartment on each side below the jerry cans and a half rack on the cab roof. I just dont know if this will be enough. I know I can fit clothes and food and utensils in the drawer and fridge but im not sure what else i need to take with recovery and tools and anything else like that which needs to fit in the compartments and on the roof.
Also inverter is a very good idea and i even got a free one off a mate.
Thanks

cool designs ,but would give you more room to put your rtt on the roof and build out the back better for storage etc ,prob save ya lots of money ..or get a trailer set up ..ive been with guys wheelin and they were able to get there trailer everywhere...my fj is small also ,for long trips im going to build a trailer ...hope this helps ..j

Yer but RTT also gives a higher cog and makes the car lower for going under trees which is a little bit of an issue for here. I know a rooftop tent will suit the cape fine but wheeling down south here the lcog will help a lot. Also dont like the idea of climing a ladder after a few drinks. At least this design is like 2 steps up. I just dont think a trailer will get up some of the tracks around here. For example one track is always wet and slippery and it has a huge hole right in the middle. What I have to do is drive to the left and slide sideways across the rim. Now thats just not gonna work towing a trailer. It would just be better and easier if it was all in the one car.
Thanks.
