What engine is in this LC ?

Having just bought a cheap RJ 77 for a toy and a beginer at LC recognition....

I sadly went the local TOYO dealer here in Oman and got a surprise.....

seemingly we are classed 3rd world by toyo and can order some of the odd trucks direct from japan- choice is limited...3 month delivery

and here's the clincher...

Not sure of the chassis code but called here the TOYOTA LX10 WGN

it comes with an option- petrol or diesel....thats it folks...9" difs heavy duty suspension, split steel rims and huge sand tyres

4.5EFI well known thirsty same as in venezuela

or a 4.2 diesel....no internet searchable codes that I've managed to dig out

The cost........well a FJ cruiser is 13,700 rials----the LX10 is between 10 and 11,000 - around 26-7,000 USD ...no tax--:arabia:

Being that I'm cheap and would rather tough and ugly like me rather than pretty.....I'm strogly leaning to a new one...rather than rebuilding my toy toyo
for a long trip via africa back to europe

any one have any idea what milage / fuel (not) economy you could expect from the diesel ?

here's a link to the same spec vehicle as here including the decals...yeugh

http://www.gec-intl.com/TOYOTALX10WGN.htm

PS my locally bought jeep has managed only 2 days use without breakdown in 1 month....having left us starnded 7 times currently awaiting head gaskets and valve seals and a fan clutch POS

LC 76 series

The vehicle you are looking at is a 76 series cruiser. Toyota's workhorse wagon now that the 200 series is out. It is quite similar to the 78 troopy but smaller and obviously with 4 doors. Leaf springs on the back and a shorter wheelbase than the troopy. The ones for developing world markets have the good old 1HZ engine which in my experience depending on terrain will do 14L/100kms. Think the code is HZJ76. Obviously they are very solid trucks and would be absolutely ideal for your trip. Plenty aftermarket stuff from Oz and ZA available

Just out of curiosity, what's the size of the sand tires?
Also, can you buy the 2-door "Troopcarrier"? Which is a 78 series. That has a bit more cargo room and I believe even higher rated rear springs. It comes with a 4.5L V8 diesel in Australia but probably the 1HZ in your location.

mm 14/ not great but workable.....just less than double my POS skoda works car:sombrero:

I saw your post on I8mud...did you add a turbo ? what increases / decreases did you get ? ok I know power went up !...I had a 4.2 nissan patrol in the uk...accelaration well nothing to shout about...but fully loaded or not made no diference, on speed or gas milage

Yep its shorter buts works better with a baby, we can order troopies here too but..walking round the back on a daily basis crawling over the deck...nah the wife say's no way jose...

we have a trailer too for the camp kitchen etc so space is not a biggy

Sand tires...I'l have to check... there was only a works truck in the carpark outiside owned by the dealer, they have no show models....you buy from the two page catalogue...mind you 1/2 is in arabic...so 1 page....

springs..not sure but its heavy duty...10 person carrier in the brochure. and limited turbos...seemingly sand issues:archaeolo

Ihz...ok will research...V8's here are regularly overheating

off to bed will reply in the morning...

The 1HZ is a good reliable performer, I'd expect between 11-15L/100km depending on terrain and load. In a hare and tortoise race, one of these would deffinatly be the tortoise, they just keep going and going forever, but not incredibly quickly.

The wagons are good bits of kit, a bit like a square sided 60 series with a coil spring front.

Hi UK,
well I don't think there is a dyno in Ghana, so I have no idea about figures, was told that the turbo would add abt 30% hp and torque, and I find that very believable once I got it set up. Still tend to enjoy the power so consumption has gone to 17L/100k but I believe that is my foot...My figure of 14L/100 is based on figures from our fleet of 75, 79, 105, old 80 and my 78 over a lot of kms. Can understand about the troopy and the baby, might have to cross that bridge in the future. The sand tyres probably OEM Dunlop Sandgripper 7.50x16 but I luckily inherited 6.5 inch 105 series rims and fitted 265 tyres - not a fan of skinny sand tyres on gravel roads! Would be interested in what you mean by limited turbos due to sand issues? Personally I would go for the 76 in a flash. Bought my troopy just before the 76 came out, if I was given the choice now it might be a tough one - although the front end takes a bit of getting used to. We have two 79s with the new front end, and a bar makes it look a hell of a lot better!
Cheers,
Gil

Petrol

Not toyos specifically ...my heep GC....and others seemingly my mechanic has lots of experience...with overheating V8's

The quantity of disco's sitting in the local mechanic souk area is testament

The straight 6 engine being long and narrow has lots of space around it
and intake etc to one side

rather than having the intake etc sitting on top keeping everything nice and cosy

I asked about both a turbo and the new V8 diesel......both are not available for the GCC market...

There has to be a reason as they are built in Japan and shipped here, so its not as if its a supply issue

Charlie, I'll ask about troopies as I'll be visiting the dealer tommorow - for a how to order visit deposit etc...

UK, I visited the website you put up showing off the 76 wagon. What a bizarre site. I found one similar to that that is based in Belgium that sells new troopies that has a similar format.http://www.transauto.be/car/export.php?car=TOYOTA-Land-Cruiser--HZJ-76-&chx=11&cma=1&se=1&mo=117&lg=en

The website you posted has an address in Miami, Florida (strange...they obviously don't sell 70 series in the US...) it has a 1-800 number for contact (US..pretty typical) and then its followed by a French international number?? I haven't called them but I wonder just where the vehicle comes from. From the site I posted above they seem to come from Belgium.

Otherwise let me know what you find out. BTW how's Oman? My visa is approved for VE, just weeks away now from our move :D and I'm still looking forward to my Amazon to the Andes trip.
