I am no expert, but.....a small trout? (shrug)

I would say a small cutthroat trout judging by the marks on the bottom of the jaw.

I would say it's a small cutthroat trout by the markings on it's lower jaw! Cool fish.

How certain are you that its a cutthroat ? I thought it was as well but when I look at pictures of adult cut's and descriptions it doesn't match up as well as I thought.

looks like there are faint orange slashes under the jaw. It's either a cutt or a cuttbow. The Root has lots of both.

Late to the party here, but that is certainly a tiny cutthroat, given the fact he is being handled with sand between your hand and his skin I hope he makes it to adulthood. If you intend to keep fishing for trout please keep in mind they do not have scales and are more delicate than bass for example, check youtube for some great videos on proper handling and release techniques.
