DWH, you're usually spot on with your advice, but in this case, your are very incorrect.

I've been at extreme odds over this topic with dwh too.
Your experiment should confirm that it definitely is best to put the controller close to the battery as practical, regardless of whether it's a PWM or MPPT unit.



As for the connectors, I do agree PowerPoles should be fine.
The connectors are not something super-critical, just that they be rated to handle the current you expect to put through them (probably something around 17-18 amps for 300W of panel wired to a PWM controller) and that they are durable if you expect to be plugging/unplugging them frequently. Them being water-tight is also not a requirement given the low system voltage.
